    Re: Klos Carbon Fiber Mandolin?

I assume there are pre-production demos out there -- and this is the place to ask. :)

    Klos Carbon Fiber Mandolin?

I'm not sure that it is widely available yet, but has anyone here played this new mandolin?

I know Peter Mix's carbon mandolin business did...
  3. Re: Best Bluegrass/Newgrass/Jamgrass Festivals

You could argue that the mother of all bluegrass festivals is Galax, VA's Old Fiddlers Convention (mid August). 10,000+ attendees and a huge campground scene for an entire week. Instead of...

    Re: Un-learning - what an ordeal !.

This is a new post on a way old thread, but I had to add it. When I was taught this tune, my teacher (Danny Knicely) told me there were two ways to play it: with or without an extra beat before the...

    Re: Ear Train

In addition to recognizing scale degrees and intervals (for which Functional Ear Trainer is hard to beat), you will benefit a lot from doing call-and-response exercises on your instrument. For that,...

Re: Pickin' Buddies in New York City

Hey Zach — I just saw this, sorry for the delay. Yes we have crossed paths for sure — at Gowanus a couple times. I’d love to pick with you any time. I do think you are a few notches above me...

    Re: Grey Fox mud

I woke at 6am Sunday and immediately drove right down the lane (Crowe) and out with no problem. I figured later the road would have been churned to soup, so leaving before the rush made sense. Not...

It really wouldn't make a difference which road you took, Jim.

Pickin' Buddies in New York City

I am a solidly-intermediate mandolin player with lots of repertoire and a desire to get better. The best way to do that is playing with people (in person of course). A small jam or just one other...

    Re: Case humidifier

I'm a big fan of Boveda's -- they reliably keep the inside of a case around 50% -- adjusting for dry or damp.
  12. Re: Bluegrass and Oldtime jams in NY around 10th of February

Probably the hottest BG jam in the city is at Mona's in the East Village, 9pm every Monday. There's also the jam at Sunny's Bar in Red Hook on Saturday nights at 8pm.

The Sheriff's Jam is on the...

Re: Pickin' Buddies in New York City

Jim -- you are absolutely correct: going to the jams is the ideal way to find folks to get together and play with, and I am doing that. Just not enough I think -- it takes time to get to be a known...

Re: Pickin' Buddies in New York City

I'm the OP -- let me clarify:
I'm looking for 1-2 players to simply get together and pick. Not a formal public jam, just us in one of our homes maybe weekly or bi-weekly. I totally don't expect...

Re: Pickin' Buddies in New York City

For larger jams, here are the ones I know about or have gone to:

Sunny's Bar in Red Hook (Sundays) -- a fairly advanced jam with good players, at least a dozen at the three I went to

Pickin' Buddies in New York City

I'm an intermediate player looking for others to form a smaller regular jam session in Manhattan or Brooklyn (okay, any of the five boroughs). I know there are plenty of established jams in the city...

Re: How to hold the pick

I'm posting this mainly to get feedback/comments, and if it helps anybody, so much the better. I think the Marshall grip – i.e. "make a loose fist and place the pick on top of the curled forefinger"...

It is certainly more fun (and easier) to play tunes that are familiar, but I recommend you learn the tunes that other players know. Mandolin playing is a very social thing -- and playing with others...
