Re: the key of Ab on a 5-string ?

    Thanks Don,

One of the things I miss most about living in California was access to all the great mandolin content: teachers, concerts, instruments, instrument repair etc.

    I don't know if...

  5. Re: Question about scale lengths and tuning...

Thanks guys. That's helpful. I'll probably be having a chat with my friend Etienne van Hove soon to discuss pricing and design issues.

  6. Question about scale lengths and tuning...

    Howdy folks!

I'm interested in the idea of designing a 5 string electric octave mandolin which would be tuned either GDAEB or a step lower to FCGDA. I have a Paul Hathway octave mandolin tuned...

    Re: C G D A tuned electric mandolin

I got an Epi mandobird some years ago from an online retailer selling them cheap. It was the end of the run and the gold sparkly ones were not selling as well as the tobacco burst or the black.

    Re: Favourite effects for electrics.

I posted about this before I think... I have a Mooer octave pedal that does various combinations of one or two octaves away from the source note. I use mine in a bit of a counter-intuitive way. ...

    Re: Feels like new

I think Etienne put D'addarios on it.
He used loop ends and then re-used the balls from the pervious set. I told him it would have been OK to buy electric guitar strings, ;)

    Re: Eastman El Rey?

Yes, and lengthen the scale to 15" and it would be, for me, pointless to try to resist buying one.

    Re: Eastman El Rey?

    Hi Doc,
The El Rey has an electromagnetic pickup in it, so it is meant to be played through a 'guitar' amplifier, rather than directly through a PA or 'acoustic' amplifier. People hereabouts have...

    Re: Eastman El Rey?

You won't need distortion, a bit of overdrive will create as dirty a sound and be a bit more versatile with 8 strings.

    It's fun.

But I prefer to use an 8 string in place of a 12-string guitar...
