Re: Drop In Tuners For 1933 Gibson A

Another vote for the Golden Age tuners. Put them on after getting my A Jr. and haven't complained since. Plus, I think black tuner buttons look cool on a Junior.

Re: A Strad-O-Lin almost identical to mine

Good deal. Even with shipping. Let us know whether the back is solid or not. Interested in finding out.

Also, if you can, show what the other items are in the case. Looks like an old receipt...

Re: A Strad-O-Lin almost identical to mine

Back is also giving away on that one. Interesting coloring on the front and blonde sides.

Had forgotten that Sue's is the one on Jake's site. My bad.

Re: A Strad-O-Lin almost identical to mine

Definitely understand. Was playing my SOL all the time except for performances and band practices.

Of course, now with the Flation, that's taking all my attention. And will probably drag it along...

Re: Just tried a Blue Chip pick on my mandolin

Will switch between a BC 40, Wegen and a tortex .88 on the Brentrup. Depending on who I'm playing with and how much treble I want to hear. Most of the time my bandmates don't hear a difference.

Re: Strad-O-Lin, United and Homenick Bros

No, I didn't buy it new. Purchased it in about 1986 or so. Give or take a year or three.

The tailpiece on it is the same shown in the above articles and was the standard tailpice on those...
  7. Re: Looking for recommendations on a 20s Gibson oval A

Well, my A Jr. was the first "good" mandolin purchased when I got serious about playing a few years ago. Am quite happy with it and have had a number of players I respect state that it's an excellent...
  8. Re: Looking for different mandolin music to learn-obscure/nonstan

Besides other Scandinavian, there is also Finnish mandolin -

Heikki Lahti was one of the pioneers. There are a number of his videos on YouTube. Here's an example -

    Re: Homemade Tuning Peg Tool

Have also worked on the holes on my Strad-O-Lin. Made a good difference. At first thought it was the tuners, but when I removed them, saw they were original Waverly. So figured it was probably the...
  10. Re: Who Has a Northfield F5-S with Airloom case?

I have an Airloom and the F5-S did not slide or bounce around inside. FWIW, my Brentrup also does not slide or bounce around in that Airloom when I've used it.

Like Keith above, Tone-Gards were on...

Re: Best Beginner Mandolin on a Budget?

While I personally love Stradolin's and have a great one, not sure it's what I would suggest for a first instrument.

My suggestion would be a properly set up Kentucky KM-150. While I like Eastman,...
  12. Re: Holding on to your personal Holy Grail mandolin

Will see if the Brentrup is the Grail, or just a grail shaped beacon. It was one of two builders I aspired to when I started playing mando again. And the less likely to obtain.

    So far, it's a big...

    Re: Kalamazoo KM21 Info please

For a while I had a KM-21. Never put more than lights on mine as the top had already begun to sink. Braces were tight (had a very experienced luthier check it out before purchase).

    You might want...
  14. Re: How does it work when people are playing together?

The main old time jams around here don't have as much singing as some. In general, the folks just play the tune in unison with guitar(s) and some mando chord backing.

Will admit to not being a...

Re: New case day - Hoffee

Same here. Have an Airloom, which is nice, but with upcoming trips and festivals, something more sturdy (and waterproof) was needed. Didn't want to wait for either the new NF CF Airloom, or the...

Re: What has happened to Elixir mando strings?

Well, the three sets I ordered from Just Strings.com arrived. Plus I found that Dave's Guitar Shop in LaCrosse, WI had them in stock.

Folks that use them might want to stock up now if they are in...

    New case day - Hoffee

Decided that Brentrup needed a sturdier case for travel than the Airloom. After a lot of thought, decided to call Bluegrass Mandolins and check on the silver-gray Hoffee. It was soon on the way here....

Re: How many of you play 3rd-less chords?

Except some Finns and Finnish Americans. They will have the bass modified to do minors. At least Am and Em. Although there are less around that know how and are willing to do it.
  22. Re: 6 Vintage Gibsons on the cover of Norman & Nancy album

Although less mandolin, another CD to look for is "The Norman and Nancy Blake Compact Disc" Rounder 11505. This contains what I believe are the other Rising Fawn tunes as well as from Nancy's solo...
