    Re: Room Humidifier recs

I try to keep it around 50+ or -, but in the summer here it gets 80-90+ %. If you play outside you expose it to these high ranges of humidity. If you live in an area like this I try not to go too low...

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

That sound is the sound of the string sticking in the nut because the slot is too tight.

    Re: Waverly tuner repair

I would try to repair it, you don't have anything to loose. Take the tuner plate off and put the broken peg back into place. The posts in the back that go into the plate will have to be peened and...

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

Sue, the tapered files are used for violin slots, so it would work. Remember you don't want to file to the bottom of the slot, so it can be much wider than the string, as long as the string is still...

    Re: Martin AK2 string recommendation

It is the same construction as a 20's Martin and should have light strings. It really doesn't need heavy strings and will sound fine with lighter strings. It will also thank you for less stress and...

Re: Eastman 305 strap button--friction fitted?

Be VERY CAREFUL tapping an end pin, they are tapered and can easily crack the block. Push and twist is the preferred method.

    Re: Fret Size

I put wider frets (.080) on the last refret on one of my mandolins. I like it in the lower registers, but not in the higher. I think I will use the Jescar .053 evo for the next one. Somewhere in the...

Re: Strap for A-style (that old chestnut)

If you put it on without the strings it could go under the strings just as easy.

Sounds great, I would buy one for that price with that sound, and I don't even need or want another mandolin. Well........

Re: An evening with the Martin harp mandolin

The tailpiece looks like something placed under the strings for decoration. I don't think it is attached to the actual tailpiece.

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

you could try lighter strings and see if they still bind in the slot. If you have done some filing then you have files and yes widen it out almost to the bottom to give the sides clearance. If you...

Re: A-strings constantly going out of tune

It may be too tight, binding on the sides. Sometimes I will take a larger file than the string size and file the slot to where the string would sit in a trough about 1/3 the diameter of the string....
  14. Re: Carbon Fiber Builder wants our input on a Carbon Fiber Mandol

I play on a river cruise on the Mississippi River in the summers. Well I did, and hope to again someday. It is hot and humid a lot of days and a CF mandolin would be a welcome addition for tuning...

When you talk of the neck around the base of the tuners was it broken and repaired? If so it will be worth less than fatt-dad quoted.

Dave, welcome to the cafe. Tune the instrument up using a good tuner. Now press on the strings sets one at a time between the nut and the tuner and watch to see if they go sharp and return to pitch....

    Re: It's an F, it's not an F

A Fender stratocaster would a closer resemblance than either the mandolin or banjo. This shot shows an elliptical center as opposed to more round in the initial shot.

    Re: It's an F, it's not an F

I must agree with Jim, when I first looked at it I saw a banjo with horns. The resonating area is round, like a banjo. It could have been made to look different, but it is round, like a banjo. Hence...

    Re: Snakehead vs. Paddlehead

Re: Are old strings hard to keep in tune? Why?

When I know it's time to change strings is when I run my fingernail under the wound strings, and can feel the dimples in the string from the frets. Sometimes they still play in tune, but I know the...

    Re: Room Humidifier recs
