    Re: New Voight

What a beautiful mandolin, your craftsmanship definitely turns my eyes a deeper shade of green. I may very well take a shot at learning big country the way you do it too, such a neat rendition on the...

Re: Any good picks out there?

I'm fond of the buffalo-horn triangles, but only after a good amount of file and polish work has been done to give them nice bevels. There's something about the tone from an organic material that...
  3. Re: Forms and Molds, can they work well and look good?

    Found a picture of Dudenbostel's:

  4. Re: Forms and Molds, can they work well and look good?

Woah, Gilchrist uses an inside mold for f-styles. Very interesting. HoGo, that form looks like it would be solid as a rock, but still really easy to un-mold the ribs.
  5. Forms and Molds, can they work well and look good?

I saw a collection of violin family rib-forms in a luthier's shop window in philly once and it struck me how pretty the scene was. The level of craftsmanship and attention to detail in the tools this...

    Re: A new mandola

Gorgeous. I'll echo the comment that it really looks playable, it has a very inviting aesthetic; "Just lift me out of this chair I'm lounging in and pick a tune or two, you wont regret you did."

    Quick gouge question

I'm slowly getting things together to start my second build and I was wondering if anyone could speak to the quality of these:

    Its...
  9. Re: Inverted recurve, any reason this couldnt be done?

    Hey,

Well, life happened and I haven't been able to do any building recently so nothing to report from my end. I'm really fascinated by this discussion though and still intend to run the...

Re: My first build, a mandola

I must say, I'm a bit audio-shy as my chops aren't where I'd like them to be, maybe I'll record something if i get into a good groove one day.

The top is cedar a-la orcas islands, the ribs and...
  11. Re: Inverted recurve, any reason this couldnt be done?

Bill - The results are handsome at the very least. I can't wait to hear about the end product.
  12. Re: Inverted recurve, any reason this couldnt be done?

Wow, this is some seriously great information. I think I am going to go ahead and commit to doing this little experiment, though it may be a while before I get it finished.

    "I have tried that...

    My first build, a mandola

I've had this one put together for about a year now, I'm still fiddling around with it, but I think its finished enough to post:

  14. Inverted recurve, any reason this couldnt be done?

So, I'm trying to work out the aesthetic of my next build and the look I have in mind calls for very smooth subtle lines. As part of my brainstorm I thought that you could put the more drastic curves...
  15. Re: string spacing in relation to a radiused fretboard

so the differences would be small enough to ignore, interesting. Thanks for all the input!
  16. string spacing in relation to a radiused fretboard

This is something that has been puzzling me:

I understand that using a radiused fretboard effectively puts a little more space between the strings on an instrument. If that's the case does using...

    Re: first builders worst nightmare

I got about half way through carving the back on my mandola (the only one I've built so far) and a big ol' knot decided to show itself. I just left it in place, carved it with rifflers, and filled...

Ooooo, moonburst. I like the name AND the aesthetic. The moon is so much cooler than the sun anyway.

Re: Help on my OM bracing

I'm working on an OM on and off but I'm at the point where I'm thinking about the bracing too. I'm intrigued by the idea of an h-brace which I hadn't heard of before, I guess I'll have to check out...

Beautiful as always James. Which wood is the guard thats second from the left? That striping is so vivid, makes me want to make sides out of it.

    Hoof Picks

I saw a post in another thread about hoof made plectrums and it piqued my curiosity, since hoofs, fingernails and, you guessed it, tortoise shells are all made of the same thing (keratin) and two of...

    Re: Tab Software for Mac

Some really heavily accurate tabs include bar lined and a 1-&-2-& type notation at the bottom to indicate rhythm, but most just rely on you knowing the song you are trying to learn well enough to...

Man, I love the look of that instrument. Do you know if it was a one-of-a-kind deal or if there are any that were similarly done?
