Re: Resonance of a fiddle vs mandolins (wow)

Glad to hear about your visit to Morgan Music. I think they are one of the real 'hidden gems' of music stores. I've made the trek down to Lebanon several times under the cover of a family...

    Re: Professional Mando Names

So far, I've never named an instrument. But, I did notice an interesting acronym could result from my new blue Fender Alternate Reality Tenor. Maybe not so much a name as a title is in order.

Re: Need advice on how to set up for looping

Hello. You will need to use some sort of pickup on your mandolin and an amp to hear what is going on. You would plug a cable from your mando pickup into the looper, and then another cable connects...

Re: Alternate Reality Fender Tenor Tele

Let the gouging begin! I just saw a listing for a Fender Tenor Telecaster on a popular instrument buy-sell-trade site for $100 over list price.
This really is no fun at all.
  8. Re: “one announcement we're privy to that will rock the industry”

From where I sit, the return of Steve Carlson to the mando-universe is important news. Add to that that he's coming back with what looks like a big step forward in amplifying an acoustic mando,...

Hi Norm, I'm Tom over in Ottumwa. Welcome to the club!
If you go to the top of the Mandolin Cafe page and pull down the Learn/Listen tab on the menu, you can access over 1900 songs in mandolin...

    Re: Pre NAMM discussion

It's going to be hard to top last year with the debut of the Waterloo mandos, the electric El Rey, and to tenor Telecaster. Thanks for keeping us all in the loop!!

    Re: Happy Birthday, Mandolin Cafe!

Happy Birthday to the Cafe and a big thank you to Scott! I remember finding the Cafe back in the days of dial-up internet. I don't think any of us had a clue what the next 20 years would bring!

    Re: cheap external pickup

For quick and cheap, google up the Cherub Violin Pickup. Less than $10. I wanted something that I could just put on and remove easily. I clamp it to my Collings MT at the rear of the bottom F...

    Re: Help with Timing

Ginger Baker ain't no part of nothin'. :)
One of my favorite places to be is on the "and" 8th note behind the 4th beat of the measure. I get a lot of side eye.

    Re: Help with Timing

Every style of music has its own 'rules of the road.' My youth was spent in the percussion section which leads to horrors in the eyes of my bluegrass bandmates when I fall back onto my internal...

    Re: Sound descriptions

This would be a great subject for one of the big dealers to make a video about. Get a good player or two with a bunch of new and vintage mandos and play through them specifically talking about tone...

Re: Looking for opinions of Big Muddy mandolins

Setup? I haven't felt the need. I did lower the bridge on my octave to bring the action down a hair, but other than that, they have been good enough for me as is.

Re: Looking for opinions of Big Muddy mandolins

Yes, yes, yes. I don't think you can go wrong with a Big Muddy. I have two instruments built by Mike Dulak, under his previous venture, Mid-Missouri Mandolin - or Mid-Mo. Both are simply...

    Re: Friendly reminder

I've had a couple of experiences with a 'wall of mandolins.' Pick up a nice one and play it while strolling along the wall. The ones that 'sing back' to you are the ones you need to play next!

Re: What has your mandolin been called?

Once upon a time, a nice lady referred to my octave mandolin as a "Lithuanian Banjo." No idea how she came up with that.

    Re: $1000.00? Mandolin

The few Morgan Monroe's I've handled ranged from 'just OK' to 'don't even bother.' Some were real pretty with inlay and such. I wouldn't give over $500 for the best of the best by MM. There are...
