    Re: Frank Wakefield

“who else should I be listening to?“
Bill Monroe - Bush, Grisman, Wakefield all listened to Bill Monroe. It all goes back to Mr Monroe.

(Listen to Mike Compton as well…)

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

“They don’t get pampered but they are respected.”

That sums it up for me. Several good mandolins - 2 Givens, 2 Gibsons, etc. - out on stands and ready to play. All came to me used so I don’t have...

Re: What's the big deal about changing strings?

Two things factor in this for me:

    1) I'm busy (not to imply that you are not...I don't know). Wife, daughter, career, adult responsibilities (taking care of house, vehicles, etc.) playing mandolin...

  7. Re: What price level and up gets you a "lifelong keeper" mandolin

That's just what I was thinking is the definition of a lifelong keeper instrument.
$4,500 for a used A-model would get you into an Ellis, Kimble, Duff, Givens, etc.
Probably 95% of us will never...

Re: Do you name your instruments?

Nope. I never got into that - I don't name mandolins, guitars, motorcycles, other vehicles...
Agree with the person who said that you name pets and children.

Hey Phin - two words: Fiddle Tunes.

    Re: Fern?

This refers to the peg head inlay on a mandolin, typically an F-5. Early Gibson F-5's either had a Fern or a Flower Pot - someone far more tech savvy than me can probably post pictures.

Re: Are travel mandolins worth it?

It sounds like the options are:

    - "beater" mandolin for travel - sacrifice some playability and tone
    - go like j. condino - take your...

Re: Which way do musicians make more money?

I got an ad from CD Baby which suggested that some artists are putting their "albums" on thumb drives instead of CD's. Has anyone seen this in real life?
