    Re: What's the real difference?

Hi Devin: don't second guess yourself. If you feel you have a keeper, then that's your answer. However, once you gain more experience and your playing has reached a higher level, then go out and...

Re: Help me narrow down my search

I second the idea of taking a road trip to Nashville. But you may need to call ahead and make an appointment due to the pandemic. I visited Nashville on a business trip a few weeks ago and tried to...
  3. Re: Long term planning for 1st mandolin and uke GDAE in the meant

    Hi cunparis:

Thanks for the clarification. I can easily play B on the A string followed by G# on the D string, no problem, and I don't have large hands or long fingers. Even with anchoring. The...
  4. Re: Long term planning for 1st mandolin and uke GDAE in the meant

    Hi cunparis:

I play fiddle, mandolin, and ukulele. You are probably referring to a soprano ukulele, which I am not familiar with. I have a tenor ukulele, and the distance between frets on my...

Re: Still cant play a break!

Matthew: as others have suggested, keep it simple by playing just the 1, 3, or 5 notes of the chord being played. You don't have to play all the notes in the melody. With practice, it will come to...

    Re: Slow Jam Tips Needed

    Bunny:

I've taken the Wernick Jam Camp in Southern CA. The leader was a professional, multi-instrumentalist, with years of experience. And a great singer too.

I applaud you for your efforts...

Re: Online Lessons With Andy Statman?

I am new to the mandolin. Only started playing in June of this year. Even I have heard of Andy Statman. Great musician!

Re: Can you recommend a good chord book?

How about considering an App? There are many mandolin chord apps. I use Selah Chords app which gives tons of voicings for each chord. Best of all, its free!

    Re: If you jam . . . .

    Sherry:

Back in post # 17, you mentioned that your fingertips get tender from playing. Have you checked the action on your mandolin? Could it be set too high? Another suggestion is to try low...

  16. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

I picked up the mandolin a few months ago, and I am loving it. I play guitar, dobro, bass, and fiddle as well. It hasn't become my primary instrument yet, but ask me again in a few more months.

Re: post a video of yourself

Very nice CB. I've never used my thumb when strumming. I'll have to give it a try. Was that second tune "Bluegrass Stomp"? Sounds a lot like it.

Re: jams with friends during covid

I just did that very thing today. Jammed with 4 friends in a park, kept our distance, didn't shake hands. It felt good to be jamming again after being isolated since April. I'm not young but I lead...

    Re: Can you teach musicality?

That's an interesting question. The Webster definition of musicality is "sensitivity to, knowledge of, or talent for music". I don't think talent can be taught. It's something that is within you.

Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

A lot of truth to what you wrote. Most people don't realize that more babies were born in the millenial generation than the baby boom generation. It is a simple fact that the greater the...
