Re: Eastman Bag - The Mandolin Store

I've been dragging one to work most nights for the last couple of years. The mandolin is faring well and the bag is holding up quite well. Last time they went on sale I bought a spare.
  2. Re: Off in the weeds on my first mando purchase ...

Coming from guitars I was initially more comfortable with heavier necks with a C profile. I found a very nice mandolin that suited me. This spring I bought a MD305 to use as my camping/festival...

    Photographing shiny things

I'm getting ready to sell a few instruments but I'm finding it difficult to get good pictures of the glossy ones. I'm getting too many reflections. Can any of y'all give me a tip or three on getting...

    Re: Picking faster?

11 time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year Michael Cleveland is also one heck of a mandolin player. He really likes to mash on it. I've never heard him play it at a mortal human's tempo.

    Re: What's up with USPS?

I've had pretty good luck with USPS and prefer them for instruments. Anything that comes to me via UPS looks like it has been dropped off a cliff.

    Re: Out of my league

I believe it was bought as an investment. I was shocked to have it handed to me. I definitely wasn't going to ask to tune it up and play it. It is in very good condition and I am sure it is playable...

Re: If You Don't Perform In Public....

MAS is apparently more difficult to treat than I first thought. Tomorrow I need to photograph a motorcycle, a banjo, my nicest guitar and a mandolin I never dreamed I would sell so I can get them...

    Re: Out of my league

The strings were loosened so it wasn't ready to play. I did gently pick at it a little and had my picture made with it. I was surprised when he just handed it to me. I admit that I gave it a good...

    Re: Out of my league

I got to hold a '24 Loar this week. It has aged much more gracefully than I have. I did not drop it nor drool upon it.

  13. Re: What is the most mandolins you've owned at one time?

For 24 hrs I was down to 3 mandolins. I had a Eastman 305 in the shop for a setup and someone wanted to know if I'd sell it. Sure, why not. When I went to drop off the gig bag that belonged with it I...

Re: If You Don't Perform In Public....

Answer: Because want and need are not the same thing.

I play a mandolin way beyond my pay grade because I like it.

    ATGATT

I separated both shoulders in a m/c accident about 10 years ago. I was a guitar player back then and had to switch to a smaller bodied guitar. Last year I reinjured my right shoulder again....

  19. Re: If you could have any mandolin in the world….

I already feel guilty for owning a mandolin that is much nicer than my skills deserve but that doesn't stop me from lusting over an Ellis F5.

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall

I keep a guitar and a mandolin on the wall by my practice chair. Most of the time it's a Taylor 614 and my Doug Clark unless the humidity gets too low. There was only one week last winter when the...

Re: Help! Buying my first mandolin!

The used 305 I bought shows signs that it has been played a lot but not abused. There's a couple places on the finish that look like it has been exposed to bug spray, sunscreen or something that left...

Re: Help! Buying my first mandolin!

I just bought a used Eastman 305 to serve as my "drag around" mandolin. I'm pretty impressed with it. The set up isn't bad and it sounds way better than my current beater. I had a 515 that I...

  25. Re: Red Spruce uses in musical instruments question

Lawrence K. Brown is a luthier in Weaverville, NC that uses a lot of red spruce. I have one of his guitars and it has a red spruce top. He has also built mandolins, lutes, violins, cellos and banjos....
