    Mandolinetto Ukulele shaped guitar

    I am building a mandolinetto (guitar shaped mandolin) The body shape is based on the Martin tiple plan published by the Guild of American Luthiers. I am using a 13.75 inch scale and a 10 fret neck....

    Is it X braced or ladder braced? I couldn't tell if those where backs or tops stacked up in the picture on your site.

    Re: Tenor Guitar Gallery & Sightings

    I like the sound of this group. Checked out a few more of their videos on you tube. Does anyone know what the tenor ukulele size instrument the guy on the left plays part of the time? The chord...

    Re: Mandolin Tops - Tonewood

    I have used Butternut for tops on mandolins, guitars, tenor guitars, ukuleles and dulcimers mostly with walnut back and sides. I like the sound I get. A lot has to do with the bracing.

    Re: Action height

    I'm a medium picker. My tenor has about .015 relief and 3/32 at the 12th fret on a 23 1/4 inch scale with medium gauge strings.

    Re: Action height

    There are a few variables. How hard do you pick? How much relief is in the neck? Light gauge or heavy gauge strings? You can take the saddle down a little at a time untill it buzzes then make a new...

    132370 Pinless bridges were pretty common on Chicago built guitars in the 40's and 50's. This one is on a Regal I rebuilt for the owner.

    Re: Advice on 6-string to tenor conversion please

    I think I would make a new neck. Even if you could shorten and narrow the existing neck the inlays would be a mess. all though using the existing neck would save you recutting a dove tail. You will...

    http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?38438-Double-octave-mandolin&highlight=double+octave this thread is about an "out of the box" project I did.
  14. Re: Non-conformist idiot here could use a support therapist ... ;

    I don't have a problem with the golden ratio thing. I thing a body that big would be hard to play. I think the sound hole is too small (I know that a balalaika has a small sound hole. Have you heard...
  15. Re: Non-conformist idiot here could use a support therapist ... ;

    You have rejected the idea of buying a ready made instrument. Many people believe it would be cheaper to build something then to buy it. This is only true IF you count your time as free and IF you...
  16. Re: Non-conformist idiot here could use a support therapist ... ;

    Building a musical instrument is about art AND science. The baritone at Allen Guitars was a steel string instrument with a fixed bridge or electric. You can't build a workable instrument from...
  17. Re: Non-conformist idiot here could use a support therapist ... ;

    I don't want to sound like a know-it-all but I think there are some flaws in your design. There are some rules to designing a stringed instrument. First your scale length and fact that you plan to...
  18. Re: Non-conformist idiot here could use a support therapist ... ;

    The longer scale puts the fret farther apart. Maybe not what you want for short fingers (try a 5 string banjo neck). Everyone starts somewhere, I have been building for 50 years and am still learning...

    Re: Conversion: Harmony Master H945 to Octave Mando

    First: Good luck. Moving the bridge is a bad idea. It will alter the sound and upset the structure. You could still do a shorter scale but the number of frets clear of the body will be reduced....

    May I suggest that Jaqaliah find a luthier that lives near by. If you find one willing to mentor you and answer all your questions this could be done. Where do you live?
