    Re: its only a Dollar..

On craigslist you have to put a price, so sometimes if people want offers made, or they are selling a group of instruments with separate prices, they put a dollar, just to hold the price spot.

Re: Refinishing the top: pros and cons

I love the look of a beat up Ajr.
It is one of my favorite mandolins for looks.
It is simple and just meant to be played.

I say keep the general beat up appeal, but do a good clean and then...

Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

    For me, Sitar and Fiddle.

Fiddle for the bowing and fretless fingerboard.

Sitar is hard on several levels.
Sitar is technically difficult to play because you play mostly horizontally across...
  4. Re: One Gibson L-model I have never seen before

I think it has to be the Gibson ES-120T Thinline.
I can't think of another that has that goofy pickguard running all the way down the top.

  6. Cool mandolins at Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca

    Hey All,

Stopped by Schoenberg in Tiburon, Ca today to play some mandolins.
They had an amazing assortment hanging up, as usual. (See photos).

    They had a Dudenbostel, a Giacomel, a...

    Re: Friendly reminder

In terms of getting a clear view of the actual tone of the instrument, you are correct.
But I actually love playing in a room with walls covered in well tuned instruments.
    I love Schoenberg...
  8. Re: What's the diff between Northfield NF5S and F5 models?

The northfield's are put in four categories these days.

NF5S is the basic model, and has binding only on the top, with a laquer finish.
They are great mandolins, and just have a bit less bling...

Re: for people who don't have deep pockets.

I think you are best served by going to play mandolins to see what you like.
All instruments are different, even from the same maker.
Some Gibsons don't have that "Gibson" sound.
    Some Gibsons...

Re: Ellis F5 Fern at Gryphon

I have no problem with a store asking me to be careful with a $10,000 instrument.
When they gave me the Ellis, and led me to a room I could play it in, The guy just said, "We only ask that you...

    Ellis F5 Fern at Gryphon

    Hey All,

I went down to Gryphon in Palo Alto yesterday to test out the Ellis F5 Fern they have in currently.
I have never played an Ellis, so I had to go.
I brought my Northfield Artist 5Bar to...

    Re: Three Beginner Questions

    For $300, don't buy an F Style.
    Buy an A Style.
For that price the A will be a far superior instrument.

Go for a used Kentucky, Eastman, or J Bovier.
The Kentucky KM150 is the general go to...
  14. Re: Newbie wondering about "The Loar" F-style mando quality

For under $500 you should get an A style.
I don’t know of a decent F style that cheap.
Get a Kentucky KM150 or similar.
It will be a much better sounding instrument than a sub $500 F style

Found a great luthier in the Bay Area

    He is...
  16. Re: Any help identifying this beautiful instrument?

The bit throwing me off is the short peg near the body, which would move it farther east.
    Maybe a Setor from Tajikistan?
I don’t see that peg on middle eastern instruments, but is more common on...
  17. Re: Any help identifying this beautiful instrument?

I would guess it is some kind of Saz. (Turkey)
There are so many versions of this kind of instrument spread across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
It is a very cool thing. I like the...

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

    Do instruments change over time?
Well, if you take a new instrument and put it away in a case for 30 years, probably not.
It will probably be a bit lacking from...

I don't get the anxious hand wringing over changing strings.
    It really isn't that hard.
Takes about ten minutes, once you get the hang of it.
Get a James Tailpiece, which makes changing strings a...

    It is a Chinese Flatiron.
