axmaker ... is that you, Russ? Still building electric mandolins?
  2. Harmony Monterey on eBay: caveat emptor!

So I bought this Harmony Monterey, not because I needed one but because it was in a Batwing case, which I did need:

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Yes, I expect people will tweak these in one way or another, especially if the pickup problem doesn't get fixed. I'm sure that Jason at Fretboard Journal has already shared my comments with Otto and...

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Light/heavy -- an unusual set to be sure. Did you choose that set in order to get a balanced response from your pickup, or for some other reason?

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Agreed. Screw poles would be the most user-friendly solution, methinks. As noted in the review, it was strung with a 40–11 set. I guess you could go lighter on the other strings to try to balance the...

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Well, the Lollar pickup definitely does not have screw poles, so adjusting them won't be a simple matter of reaching for your screwdriver. I should think Eastman needs to get the correct pole height...
  8. Re: Anyone near Camarillo want to make a few bucks?

ooh ... ad deleted ... guess that means the cases are gone! Coincidence?
  9. Re: Anyone near Camarillo want to make a few bucks?

that would be appreciated. I'll try to check in with you in a couple of weeks if I don't get another offer and the dude doesn't sell his cases or throw them out.

What are they selling, a lock of hair from Gulliver?
  11. Re: Anyone near Camarillo want to make a few bucks?

We all have our routines. I have 2 or 3 day jobs, depending on how you count, so flipping and string sales via Emando.com is at best a tertiary income stream, and it receives a commensurate time...
  12. Re: Anyone near Camarillo want to make a few bucks?

Oh, I've gone back and forth with this individual already. He does not wish to lift a finger to ship these cases.

And sure, I could lecture people on how to conduct their lives, but after I do,...

Wow. Contact Neil Gladd in D.C. and see if perhaps you've got anything there that he doesn't have.

    Re: Eastman ERM El Rey

Well, perhaps I shoulda said "shrunken solidbody electric guitar" to be more precise. But I only learned about the El Rey guitar in the process of writing my review. It's not as though someone took...
  17. Re: A.F. Anderson 12-string Mandolin made from old, 1660 London p

Yeah, this is a cool instrument but either "piano" or "1662" is a work of fiction. No such thing existed, in London or elsewhere.

Kirkman, the first English firm to make pianos, was established...

Re: Help with ID'ing a Mandolin

The action is high, even though the bridge has been tipped over on its side (it looks as though someone might have done that deliberately in an attempt to lower the action). This means the neck is...

Take a year of music theory and learn your major & minor scales in every key, and you won't need no stinkin' apps.
  21. Re: C Standard (Guitar) Tuning On Electric Tenor

What electric tenor do you own?

If you have a tenor guitar and are familiar with fifths, tune it CGDA like a viola. That was the intended tuning for the first tenor guitars in the 1920s.

    If...

Hm, I wonder if the Korg Dolcetto-V would work on the Lyon & Healy mandola? Its clamp is designed for a violin or viola pegbox.

Pretty sure it was standard 13.875" although I didn't have a tape measure handy. I submitted the review and will post a link when it's live.

    Re: Remic microphones

Well, I found a DPA for 1/2 price at Guitar Center, so I went ahead and bought it. It came with the guitar clip so I also picked up a fiddle clip on eBay. Rather than an "instrument-specific" mic, I...
