  1. Re: Are there already any pros playing the new 1923 reissue?

No idea but they should send one to you, Los Hermanos Cubero is still killing it!

    Re: Flat top for blues?

I’ve owned a Northfield Calhoun, and also an Arches ft-o, which is a similar flat top mandolin. I really liked both, but my favorite mandolin for blues is a 50’s Di Mauro with a deeper body, that is...

Re: Flatiron Festival F in Classifieds...

We know from the ad that the tuners are German-made, but no comment on the instrument itself. There is a similar mandolin from a private seller that is very clearly advertised and at 40% the price. ...

Re: French Mandolin 1950s René Gérôme?

    Looks nice!

I have a Di Mauro from the 50s that is a great mandolin. These are sleepers if you consider the current price of French guitars from that time period.
  6. Re: Northfield post on social media and their email newsletter

Really hopeful that single cutaway is electric
  7. Re: Need audio tracks for Mandolin Blues from Memphis to Maxwell

I have and really enjoy that excellent book. Mine directed me to a website on the first page with a passcode to stream the audio files - I assume yours did not? I would reach out to the publisher.
  8. Re: Why not a domestic, hand built instrument instead?

Hopefully that Skipper will speak to somebody and will make them very happy, at a good price. There’s a 48 hour approval period, minus PayPal fees and return shipping.

Re: The Mandolin Store has moved to Lebanon, Ohio

I had a great experience with a recent Octave mandolin order. Very nice people.
  10. Re: Humidity different in same 10x10 room with humidifier in plac

Is the reading on the hygrometer reasonably close to the reading on the humidifier when they are in the same part of the room?

    Re: Compton vs. Henry Lessons

I done both and I really like both.

Chris Henry relies heavily on learning by ear. A little harder at the outset but you remember the songs better. Chris also has organizing principles for the...
  12. Re: Thile & Daves: It's Fiddle Tune Request Time!

I love Michael Daves’s choices on that album. Really catchy improvisational ideas, always in service to the melody. And they sing well together.
  13. Re: Embarassing Question - Which Mandolin to Bring to Jam?

Putting proficiency aside, there are circumstances where it’s nice to have an economical instrument. I would start with a basic instrument until you have a feel for what works best in this...

Re: Eastman MDO 305 is In The House!

Same experience here. Got a great deal on a new one from the mandolin store. Right out of the box it sounds great, thanks it part to a finish that doesn’t get in the way of the instrument doing its...

    Re: Quint Mandolin

I’m resurrecting this thread to see if anyone has had more experience with these. I’m curious how they relate in quality to Northfield and the the high-end Kentucky and Eastman mandolins. Thanks

    James tailpiece and cured back.

I’ve never played an instrument with Bosnian maple.

Northfield at that price point has a finish that is very conducive to good tone.

Re: Would I be happier with a ‘20s Gibson F4?

Nothing sounds like an early Gibson oval hole mandolin, including every other early Gibson oval home mandolin.

They’re great, but unlikely to be as easy to play and maintain as the Collings.
