I am in absolute, heart-stopping, breath-taking, love. And the girl's not too bad either. ;)

    Re: Outdoor picking chair

These all look too short to me. I like my left knee to be raised when I pick while sitting - sort of classical guitar style. For me it's a barstool. Not the fancy (and heavy) rotating kind, just the...
  4. Re: Well-known builders who say instruments don't open up?

    I like it :)
  5. Re: best performance mic for individual instr w good gain

Really interesting mics... I've been thinking of ways to rig a stage so that set-up is minimal between acts for our local open mic. We run it out of a theater, and these might be just the ticket....
  6. Re: Mandolin MORE popular than Guitar 100 years ago . . . ??

    Great topic...

As some have mentioned, the uke is in it's third revival (some would say the peak) - massive sales, mainstream and commercial use. The little four string is back in a very big way....
  7. Re: best performance mic for individual instr w good gain

Interesting problem... I play through a SM57 in two separate venues. One gives me great volume w/ no feedback, the other is exactly the behavior you describe.

I've come to the conclusion that it's...

    Re: humiliation :

I am a hack. This I know, and joyfully embrace. It takes a certain amount of fearlessness to get up there and jam, sometimes more than I can muster.

I have learned however, not to worry too much...
  9. Re: Well-known builders who say instruments don't open up?

Certainly we can say that enough people believe something is happening to warrant investigation – but we’ve seen the “common wisdom” and volumes of anecdotal evidence turn out to be imagination time...
  10. Re: Well-known builders who say instruments don't open up?

I’m not making any claims as to what the phenomenon is – only looking critically at what it is claimed to be...

    But since you asked,

My personal opinion is that the phenomenon could easily be...
  11. Re: Well-known builders who say instruments don't open up?

I read that post, thanks - I should have been more specific: "there is no substantive or credible evidence...".

Methodology issues with those studies aside, there is simply not enough real and...
  12. Re: Well-known builders who say instruments don't open up?

Wood changes over time. Environment can have a profound effect on changes over time - particularly humidity. It stands to reason that some of those changes could effect sound. Decades of time can...

Re: Always Carry A Tuner To The Music Store?

    It's funny,

My favorite shop around here does two very simple things that make it a cut above every other store I've ever been in.

    1) They have signs everywhere telling you to pick up and play...

Re: Always Carry A Tuner To The Music Store?

The invention of the cheap vibration tuner changed my life. I keep a few all over the place - bags cases, car. I always take one into music shops.

There is one shop here locally that always tunes...

Re: I don't like the sound of tremolo.

    +1

Tremolo, like any technique, can be over-used. It often is.
  16. Re: Is there ONE pickup to use for both guitar AND mandolin?

    Barcus-Barry "Outsider"

Not perfect, but serviceable with a decent EQ/Pre-amp.

    Love 'em... thanks for sharing.
  18. Re: Is there ONE pickup to use for both guitar AND mandolin?

That Schertler is great, if you can pony up the dough - it's a great sound. The advantage of the BB I use is they cost about ten times less ($45-$60 US as opposed to $400-$500). Most of the venues I...
  19. Re: Is there ONE pickup to use for both guitar AND mandolin?

They do exist - known broadly as "Stick-on Transducers". There are significant trade-offs, both in tone and noise. I'd stay away from anything that has a long cable attached, (like the Dean Markley...
