    Re: Chop Chords

Play a C and use the 5th fret of the G string, no E string. That gives you the flatted 3rd of the minor easily and a good chop if that's what you are looking for.

Re: Bowl Back Mandolin needing some TLC

I agree with Greg, I slowed down an old Gibson pickguard with cyanoacrylate and it lasted for 10 or so years. Yours is more advanced, but it should slow it down.

Nice Dan, I have only played one Pava, but it made an impression. Enjoy as I am sure you will.

Re: Replacing Tuners on 1930's Mandos

Simply wind the string down on the post to keep your break angle close to the same.

I would agree Tri-Flow is a much better lubricant than 3 in 1.

I used to use the rounded corners for a long time, but am using a pointed pick now. Like the sound on the G string better.

Re: Collings MT-O v Gibson A: Any Opinions?

I have a '22 Gibson, the tone is remarkable, but it limits me as I play up the neck. For a long time it was my only mandolin and playing old time it was great. When I started having to improvise...

    Re: If you jam . . . .

Sherry, I find the better I know the tune or feel comfortable in a lead the lighter I play. A new tune or something I am not as familiar with has me playing harder. That may be the finger pain....

Re: Better tone with light strings?

I put GHS thin core strings 10-41, on a few guitars a while ago and was surprised at how good they sounded. Started out for an old ladder braced parlor guitar so I could tune it up to pitch. WOW it...

    Re: Refretting

I use a diamond sharping steel, maybe 3X8" for flattening frets and for initial sharping of chisels and plane blades. Nothing like getting a tool that can multitask and spend less.

    Re: No motivation

It's been tough with no gigs and I am thankful for the few small jams lately. First 6 weeks I cut wood every day. I burn wood for heat and have not ever had so much as now. Between gigs and other...

    Re: Refretting

I bought the SM fret puller/cutter, many years ago when it first came out. It chipped on the cutting surface and was useless so I make a few sets of my own that have lasted for decades. I don't use...

    Re: Refretting

I make my own fret pulling pliers, but I cut the fret with a side cutter, it is hardened and designed to cut. I simply cut the tang and bend the fret and it snaps right off. Since I will cut or file...

Re: Mandolin setup - rob meldrum

You can shim your old nut, don't need a new one. If you can get it off a piece of paper under the nut is usually enough to raise it so it works. After a refret you may need a different shim, but for...

    Re: Refretting

I use the small fret puller I made. Simply hold the tang by it and bend the curve working across the fret. I do one at a time. It's simple and as rcc56 says you don't need special tools.

For me I may not like the sunburst on your particular instrument, but I don't care at all for a black top. Easy peasy.
