    Re: Trends in finishing

It is easier to sell a $15 can of finish than a $300 compressor + $200 spray gun + all of the accessories......

For projects like the one you mentioned, I always send them to Matt Eady in Athens,...
  2. Re: Finger Plane and/or Gouge Recommendation

In no way do I want to discredit the Caruther's scraper. I have both of them and they are very useful tools....but, they are another expensive specialty tool.

I made a copy out of a thick old...

Since we're still trying to enable old tool nerdiness among the crowd....I'll repost these:

I sold my Yates Y30 and brought home an Oliver 217 bandsaw.

I also impulse purchased a pretty cool...

Re: Chechen wood for back and sides?

Chechen, Billy web, Chokte Kok, & Katalox are all non traditionals that I used back in the early 1990s when they were regularly found at the hipster decking and golf course materials places around...

Re: Tell me why not: Carbon fiber bracing.

It seems like no matter what suggestions folks in this thread are making, the original poster is not satisfied. You are asking for definitive answers to a problem that only exists in your own head....

Re: Chechen wood for back and sides?

Of all the affordable non-standard rosewood like materials I've used, Katalox is probably my favorite and you can often find it for about $10-12 a board foot at better hardwood suppliers.

    Re: torrified tops

You don't need to spend extra money for torrified tops. I get excellent results torrifying wood at home in a common kitchen oven. My recent thread on the Carolina Quartet shows a couple of examples....

Re: Tell me why not: Carbon fiber bracing.

In the mid 1990s, I made a series of guitars with laminated carbon fiber braces- most were sitka spruce with .020-.030" carbon fiber center beams, glued to redwood tops from the Lucky Strike tree....

Ha! Have you ever known me to make copies of the same old same old baby $#!t brown 10,000,000 already done instruments? ;)

    Re: Lyon and Healy mandocellos

There is a beautiful two point carved L&H mandocello here in town. It is a very nice instrument, but the neck is the size of a telephone pole....

Here are couple of other ideas from the same log, the bass top, and the F5 top that I torrified here in the shop.

    Carolina Quartet & Persimmon fittings

One of my students, Zach Dease, and I received a generous Folklife grant from the North Carolina Arts Council to build a matched quartet of our choice from all North Carolina woods. This is my second...

  22. Re: How often should my mandolin need to be tuned?

I know plenty of half deaf old geezers that never tune their mandolin. That's probably why they rarely are invited to play with anyone else and spend all of their time plinking at home or on the...

I played Dave's innovative mandolin shown above at the Guild of American Luthier's Convention that year.
