Re: new top F hole repair

Thanks everyone. I do plan on trying to improve the repair, but will use the top reguardless. I plan on picking up another back and side set to build for this top, and have ordered a new piece for...

    Re: Roger Siminoff's mandolin book

Thanks everyone. I have seen the debate about his tap tuning method. I am primarily interested in the construction. It sounds like the used ones are genuine.

    Roger Siminoff's mandolin book

It appears that the later edition is currently out of stock. I found a couple of used ones but they claim to be spiral bound. Was the original book spiral bound or are these knock-offs of some sort?...

Re: new top F hole repair

    Steve,
That is another approach I would not have thought of.
If I can't make the repair completely invisable I will be getting another piece of wood and starting over for this build. I will pick up...

Re: new top F hole repair

Wow it looks like I should have asked some questions before I started.

    Matt,
    That sunburst is beautiful.

    Jim,
That looks like a good way to cut them, but I don't have a dremel press so I...

Re: new top F hole repair

    Thanks John, Martain,

Since this was my first attempt at cutting F holes I expected some issues although not this drastic. This makes the top a good candidate for a sunburst finish, but it is...

    new top F hole repair

I was cutting the F holes out with a coping saw and a piece split off. The coping saw has a 16TPI blade and it seemed way too aggressive. It would stick every time it hit the darker grain. This may...

Re: A couple of build questions

Thanks everyone. It appeared to me that these things were not done in general, but it is good to know why. I hope to never have to take it apart, but building with repair in mind makes sense. Your...

Re: A couple of build questions

The build is still in progress. The back and sides are together, and the top is carves to a uniform 0.2" (~5mm) which is what prompted there questions. I am ready to put the F holes in the top and...

Re: Bouzouki with extremely high action

We would need a bit more info to try to determine what the issue is.
Is there a truss rod in the neck.
Is the neck pulling from the body.
Can the bridge be lowered to bring the action down.

    It...

    A couple of build questions

I am building an archtop guitar shaped octave mandolin and have a couple of questions.

    1. I read in Robert Benedetto's book that he puts a sealer coat on the inside to help against rapid humidity...

    Re: Capo for Octave/Bouzouki

Another vote for the quick draw. It parks behind the nut and can be slid into place very quickly.

    Re: Another CF reinforcement question

    Thanks everyone.
So it sounds like recessing with epoxy is the way to go. I was planning to extent the CF into the headstock, especially since I am installing a truss rod.
    I am kind of commited...

    Another CF reinforcement question

I Picked up a piece of solid maple for the octave mandolin build. It has some quilting so I am going to reinforce it with 2 CF bars. One on each side of the truss rod. I have 3 questions.
    1. Should...

Re: New OM build maple neck questions

That is an interesting observation. I hope that your attendance was technical and not personal. I will try to find a piece big enough to bookmatch.

Thanks for the detailed replies. It does confirm my concern, and gives me good insight to the issues. If I were to laminate the 2 pieces with an ebony stringer in the center, would that improve the...

New OM build maple neck questions

I am building an Octave Mandolin, and the back and sides are quilted maple. I would like to carry the quilted theme to the neck but have some questions.
    1. All of the figured maple neck stock I have...
  19. Re: Pickup options for an F hole octive mandolin

i looked at the MISI site, and the only pickup option is an under saddle pickup. Will they work with any pickup? This is an archtop, so the under saddle will not work. It is a very interesting option...

    Re: Another carbon fiber question

Just to close out this thread, I put a couple of washers on the truss rod (why didn't I think of that) and was able to get the relief set up. I left it with .008" clearence under frets 6, 7, and 8...
  21. Re: Pickup options for an F hole octive mandolin

I have used the K&K twins but have had issues with sufficient gain on some mixers I was feeding. I have also used an AKG C411 external mike, but the sticky stuff makes a mess out of the top, and not...
  22. Re: Scale length for an octave mandolin build

Thanks everyone. I do understand the relationship of the bridge for compensation. My concern was how much leeway there is between the bridge and the carved top and where the f holes are set. 22...
  23. Scale length for an octave mandolin build

I am in the process of building an octave mandolin with a small guitar shaped carved top to be tuned G D A E.
I have seen scale lengths mentioned from 21 to 23+ for these instruments; is there any...

    Re: Another carbon fiber question

It is at the end of its adjustment. I will see how deep it is when I remove the fretboard. It is a 1970 yamaha, so not a super expensive one but it has a decent sound so it's worth fixing.
