  1. Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

Hi there, mandolin lovers. Many moons ago I wrote an ebook on how to set up a mandolin. Mandolins are finicky little beasts and very slight adjustments can make a very big difference. I've been...

    Re: Zenison

For $135.99 I would not expect to sound good let alone be playable. YMMV

Ha. I always miss that "Listing Ended" notice! Wish they'd use a bigger font or watermark the dang page!
  10. Re: A colascione and a gittern completed recently

It's tuned in fourths or fourths and fifths (for octaves). They were historically also tuned in lute intervals.

    I carve them using skalpels.

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

That is correct, but it will still be an upgrade. I've seen the bobelock wooden mandolin case, and it's much more sturdy than my current case.

    Re: Gloat gloat gloat ...

We'll find out. It's possible that the photos were just placeholders and what I'll get is an actual Mando-Strat ... but I'll be OK if that happens. The point is that I paid a Mando-Strat price for...

    Gloat gloat gloat ...

Well, it may have finally happened ... I bought from an online retailer tonight what was purportedly a Fender Mando-Strat ... but judging strictly from the photos that accompanied the listing, it may...

Re: Tell me it gets easier.

When I started the mandolin the first mistake I made was thinking it was kinda like an upside down tiny guitar. It didn't take long for me to realize it is a wholly different instrument that...

I probably shouldn't have said anything but since I did I've just keep going.

  16. Re: Emotional hearing, and changing out my 7-year old strings...

When I gig regularly I tend to really put a lot of wear on the strings and need to change them after about two 3-4 hr gigs, so perhaps 6-8hr time gig time. I get the flat spots on the side of the...

Where’s the part about changing the strings:))
  18. Re: Emotional hearing, and changing out my 7-year old strings...

    Yup...

Many if not most of the bigger-name pro musicians have techs do their string changes. I've talked to many, and they shrug when I ask them techie questions about their instruments because...
  19. Re: Emotional hearing, and changing out my 7-year old strings...

Several years ago, I was talking to a reasonably well known mandolin player (American) during the interval. He’d clearly been having difficulty with the tuning on his mandolin during the first set...
  20. Re: Emotional hearing, and changing out my 7-year old strings...

I thought I was bad! I only change my J74 strings every 3-4 months (which seems like a “long time” to a lot of people)

    After 3-4 months:
    1. I lose a lot of volume
    2. I lose much of the tonal...

Re: Only change ONE string at a time!!

Casual player: yes, change one pair, or single strings, at a time. This minimizes your risk of changing the bridge position or action accidentally.

But let's face it, it's a mandolin. If it's been...
