Re: Trying to make a modest leap...

A few years ago, I bought a Kentucky KM-1000 used for $800, and it has been a good one.
  3. Re: I need a mandolin stand for stage use.

I use the Hercules stand that you just set the mandolin down in. You do have to be careful not to knock over, but it is very sturdy, and I have never had any problems. Just put it somewhere that...
  4. Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on

The Korg custom pedals have a great visual display, and are very accurate. I use a hand held one for home and studio, and it is extremely accurate and easy to tune.
  5. Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on

The TC Polytune is a VERY good foot pedal tuner anyway you strike it. A good second to this would be the Korg Pitchblack Custom. Also very good.
  6. Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on

I am using the TC Electronics Polytune 2 on my fiddle/mandolin pedal board, and it works great. Polytune feature doesn't really work well other than with guitar, but the tuner is very sensitive and...

    Re: Kentucky KM 650 question

The Kentucky mandolins can sound really good at the price range. Just enjoy it!

    Re: eq pedal with boost

I would look at a strict clean boost, like the Fire Eye Bright Eye, or if you need a DI, the Red Eye preamp pedal. Small format, plenty of boost, done.

    Re: K&K for mandolin

The Fishman is the deal. You might be able to get away with the M200, but it may have a "drier" sound. The M300 has the pickup mounted in the bottom of the bridge so it still gets some body...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

Yep, that's the other thing about the Red Eye--flexibility. I have played on stages with ample phantom power, and I have played with none. I have played when my battery died and we had phantom. I...
  11. Re: Disappointed with the Nashville music scene

You can find it, but maybe not on the strip. Many of the best players are playing elsewhere or touring. However, it is not uncommon to hear some great musicians sit in with groups in Nashville, even...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

Not saying it is a bad pre. I used it with a K&K in my mandolin, and it worked ok. But had to EQ the heck out of it to get it to sound good. The Red Eye is much better, IMHO. And a better format for...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

I had the K&K Pure preamp, and it wasn't bad, but it had some wonky EQ controls better suited to guitar. In addition, it isn't a DI unless you get the XLR version. Personally, I think the Red Eye...

Re: TC Electronic Polytune Clip-on Tuner

The TC polytune works much better for higher tuned instruments like violin and mandolin than any other tuner I have. I have a TC polytune 2 on my fiddle/mandolin pedal board and it works great. Only...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

In br1ck's defense, the Sunnaudio IS only just a little more than the Red Eye street price, but I really like the format, sound and features of the Red Eye.

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

I'm sure the SunnAudio is good, but they are 300-500 and not a compact pedal format (with boost). Honestly if I was going that route I would just go right to an Avalon U5 or Reddi, which I am pretty...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

And, I should add, I do still also use the Fire Eye Bright Eye, but only because I have that at the beginning of my effects chain, and the Red Eye at the end, as a DI. I can use boost at both ends of...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

The Fire Eye Red Eye is a great piece of gear and dead simple to use. It actually does have a very simple tone control on it that is very effective, especially for dialing out any harshness without...

    Re: Volume boost pedal question

What you might want if you don't want the sounded altered when you boost is a clean boost with no EQ. The Fire Eye Red Eye has a nice one built into what is essentially a DI/preamp, The MXR mentioned...

    Re: K&K for mandolin

I had a K&K Twin hybrid with the carpenter jack, and it did not mess with the finish on my Kentucky KM-1000. Just have to be careful not to pull too hard on the 1/4 cord and pull the carpenter jack...
  21. Re: Effects for use on acoustic amp or PA with K and K pickup

The best reverb I have used so far, in a pedal format, and still use to this day, is the Neunaber Wet (mono). It is a very clean and beautiful-sounding reverb that does not mess with your core tone,...
  22. Re: Effects for use on acoustic amp or PA with K and K pickup

I have been down the digital multi-effects pedal road before many times, and they can be quite fun and a great learning experience. Some people swear by them. But I have found a dedicated,...
  23. Re: Effects for use on acoustic amp or PA with K and K pickup

If you are mainly using an acoustic sound and not wanting to sound like a guitar, I would stick with time delay and/or modulation effects. Things like reverb, delay, chorus, phase shifting, etc. can...
  24. Re: KM1000 Spec Question -- side width?

Yep, I've got a 2003 and it is a great sounding bluegrass instrument for sure, especially for the money.

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

The Korg GA Custom is a small handheld tuner and it is chromatic. It has a number of settings and is extremely accurate for its small size and relatively low price.
