    I agree with the recommendations for graphite ( the black part of the pencil) in the nut groove, or perhaps replacing the nut itself, the tuner could be loose or even the bridge and or tail...

    I always thought of a hornpipe as having a rhythmic hesitation in each measure as opposed to a reel which is 4 beats straight on.
    I suppose the particular dance would drive the tune back in the day.

    Hi congrats I have the Goldtone Mandocello as well and i think its a great instrument, plywoody yes, but decent construction and pretty good unamplifed tone and response, speaking of amplification
