Re: Really need to work on my right hand

Playing fast is 95% mental. When we have to play fast we tend to tighten up and fight it. Try to relax and roll with the beat enjoy and quit fighting it,you are capable of playing faster than dance...

  3. Re: Newbie here, suffering from analysis paralysis

You can do your own set up just remember, if a 32nd on an inch works for a guitar a mandolin needs at least a 64th. The short scale and "twin" strings make everything about a set-up more critical....

Re: Looking for My 1st Mandolin

Do yourself a favor and listen to these knowledgeable people and stay away from Washburn. I bought a Washburn mandola to enter into mandolas. Made a fairly good instrument after I done considerable...

  6. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I can also agree in principal with Gibson, but while we are going historical let's look at why the F5 was so universally copied. I've been a mandolin nut since a kid and remember if you had the money...
  7. Re: What to look/listen for when mandolin shopping?

Balance to me is the mark of a good to great instrument. Even tone can be personal preference. Most of what you list can be easily corrected or just gotten use to. My best mandolin is a Dearstone, no...

Re: Tuner that works for setting intonation?

I'm not following something--why do you need the tuner to pick up the harmonics? I tune the 12th fret to the harmonic by ear, then check at 5th fret octave to next string again by ear although I can...

  10. Re: Pic direction when starting on a string

Bill Monroe, the original BG mandolin player, had a very free right hand.I don't know where or when it was decided that a constant down up pick stroke was the way to play BG, but in my mind it starts...

What caught my attention in this thread was the title. Wish I could change strings with "slight frustration"

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

Markus brings up an interesting point, if our auditory memory is so short, how do we know the strings have gone dead. If we can't remember how the strings sounded new, how do we know that a month or...
  13. Re: PSA: you should try an actual mandolin pick!

There is no such thing as a mandolin pick. There are picks thatbsuit YOU better for mandolin. I use very different picks for guitar than mandolin--- that's what suits me. Someone else can use the...

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

The question I have is. If auditory memory is so short, how did I know Dad's banjo had been apart (post 20) I realize that I'm talking about an instrument that I " knew" very well, had heard...

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

+1 for a good instrument getting better, at least for a time. I don't think a 10 year old mandolin will be better in 50 years or even a 2year old better in 5 years, but you will never convince me...

Re: Looking to Replace the Bridge

I don't see how the lean affects intonation. Intonation is set by where the top not the bottom of the bridge is located. If intonation is way off between strings ie E string is correct but D string...

Why does the bridge need to be replaced? In my experience bridges don't wear out. I have replaced them because they were poor quality from the start, replaced them to improve intonation, replaced one...

    Re: What makes Chop?

I respectively disagree. Releasing the pressure a milli-second BEFORE you strike the strings will leave no chord sound which has become a second acceptable "chop" but in my mind you can lay your hand...

    Re: Loar Tone "Sweet Spot"
