Re: What are your go-to crowd pleasers?

Hah, John Flynn, you nailed it - I do love 3/4 time. So much that I often play melodies in 3/4 that are written in 4/4. With the right melody, it works amazingly well.

But I love fiddle tunes and...

Re: What are your go-to crowd pleasers?

    Almost anything in 3/4 time.

    Your Sweet and Shiny Eyes
    In The Pines
I Always Get Lucky With You
    Precious Lord Take My Hand
    White Dove

There is something about 3/4 time that just goes...

    Re: Redtip wood?

This is anecdotal only, but when I was in SC one of our tree service contractors complained that it was "hard as iron". I never tried to use the wood.

    Re: Granite in the shop

I occasionally use the granite samples I have in the shop as weights when glueing, instead of clamps (or with clamps).

This thread motivated me to address the lack of file protection in my shop, woohoo!

Re: Wayne’s World of Mandolin Channel?

I like the video on Dark Modes, which we covered in multiple lessons. The great thing about the video is, you can watch it as much as you need to. I recorded our lessons and have listened to them...

Re: jams with friends during covid

Honestly, I think it's the singing in a group setting that raises risk significantly, even outdoors. And personally, I can't not sing if folks are playing a song I know that needs a harmony part...

Re: jams with friends during covid

I'm just saying that you can be diligent and intelligent about minimizing your risk and also be unlucky. I did what I could and was getting on with my life . . . but I hear you.

    Keep calm and...

Re: jams with friends during covid

I haven't jammed in what seems like forever, and I still managed to contract a mild case of covid. I consider myself a disciplined mask wearer and hand washer and indoor crowd-avoider, well informed...

Re: Wayne’s World of Mandolin Channel?

I've looked at a couple of the videos, they very much remind me of some of the lessons I took with him several years ago. I really like his teaching style; the music theory that I got from him has...

Sticky: Re: Loar Picture of the Day

    Happy birthday indeed!

I have to say, the surprise to a tree geek like me is seeing a copy of Michael Dirr's book in the background on a thread devoted to Loar mandolins . . .

Re: how do you clean your files?

I have a file card, which sometimes isn't enough. One of the "tricks" I've tried is a scrap of hard wood, which sometimes isn't enough. Hadn't thought of a soft common nail, not a bad idea.

    I...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

I think it's way more likely that sometimes our perception is deceptive.

Humans are funny creatures, we can be biased in all kinds of ways that are not apparent to us, that may not even seem...

Re: How to build a solo?

I have "worked up" solos. I don't write them down, but if they're good (or if they have good parts) I memorize them so I can play them again. YMMV

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

Sonic, you wouldn't be in the UK, would you? "Sycamore" in the UK refers to Acer pseudoplatanus whereas in the US that tree would be called Sycamore maple (still a confusing common name).

    Re: New Frets!

My Hamlett A has regular size frets 1 - 14 and narrow frets 15 - 22. I don't remember noticing the difference until after I had owned it for awhile, probably because I don't routinely play up that...
