    Re: Gibson F4...1924....1925...??

The conventional wisdom seems to be the serial number says when your mandolin left the factory (1927?) while the FON is a better indicator of when it was built.

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

For a lot of us, where that pilgrimage is either impossible or cost prohibitive, the catch and release of used instruments, appropriately depreciated, is an alternative method for sampling a range of...

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

This Ratliff just got relisted as a bottom of the budget option:

Mark doesn't list an asking price but I'd imagine this one to be in range:

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

A couple of other two-points to consider, depending on budget, include the Pomeroy at Fiddler's Green:

    For half the price,...

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

A two-point is going to shrink the field considerably as well as raise the cost. The options that sprang to mind immediately were Phoenix, Old Wave, and Rigel:

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

It depends on what you seek. Lately, there have been some Ratliffs that we've discussed. Silverangel Econo models. Summits are probably in the same weight class. Rigel A Plus (or Natural if you can...

Re: Trade in KM150 for an MD305 or MD505?

In my mind, you are considering a lateral move to the 305 and at best a modest improvement to the 505 if you find that the neck profile or tone more pleases you. I would save your money for an...

A-styles are generally believed to provide more bang for the bucks burning a hole in your pocket.

I've only seen one black snakehead with A2-z on the actual label. ;)

  13. Re: Identifying an old Gibson mandolin - thanks

Thatís a great question. I guess it depends on whether I was trying to buy or sell it. :))

Were it mine, Iíd probably call it a Gibson snakehead with all of the defining features of an A2-z. But I...
  14. Re: Identifying an old Gibson mandolin - thanks

The only thing that will identify it definitely as an A2-z is that designation on the label. There are a number of instruments who have those same characteristics, particularly blacktops, that are...
  15. Re: Identifying an old Gibson mandolin - thanks

Is it a snakehead? My WAG would be 1925 based on mine.

There are references to that FON here (and I thought all A2-z's were built in 1923):

Yes. It is a handbuilt mandolin from an established independent American luthier trading in the same price range as a factory built instrument from overseas. In my experience, mandolins are finicky...
