  1. Re: A Georgian Panduri (ფანდური) I built

    Trio Mandili rocks!

I found a very nice-looking panduri on ShopGoodwill of all places, with what appears to be a more Western-style chromatic fretboard. I actually haven't taken it out of the...

Re: Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass

There would have been more, but the mandolin was accidentally buried in whipped cream during a photo shoot.
  3. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

If you bring a mandolin to an old-time session, don't play it like a bluegrass mandolin. No chop chords in old-time!
  4. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

It's certainly an important instrument in African-American string band music. White old-time string bands like the Skillet Lickers used it, but less frequently.

Maybe, if you claim that Pete Townshend is the one who smashed it.

  7. BRIGHT STAR: musical by Steve Martin & Edie Brickell

Woo hoo! I've got a pit orchestra gig playing mandolin for a production of Bright Star. I saw a professional production a couple of months ago — what I'm doing is a high school production, but it...
  8. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

Heck, Bill Monroe himself played folk mandolin before he started the Blue Grass Boys! Just listen to his recordings with his brother Charlie.

Just for the record, bluegrass is not "traditional...

    All hail the Mandolin Café!

(Now to get the mildew off the OHSC for my '30s National Silvo tenor ...)

    Re: Harmony H35 Mandolin Chicago

Wow! Mark, do you know if your uncle was a mandolin player? Is there a chance this was his personal instrument?

Re: vintage 4 string bass mandocello

Seller says the scale length is only 25.5 inches, so it really is more of a cello than a bass.

Re: Lyon & Healy Style C

I took a Style B in for a refret and was told by the luthier that it had bar frets. For a while I made the mistake of assuming that all carved L&H instruments had bar frets.

Getting mildew off a gig bag

Some people worry about humidifying their instrument rooms. I'm afraid mine is a little TOO humid.

Got a Boulder Alpine gig bag here with a lot of mildew on it. What's the best way to get it...

  17. Re: Lyon & Healy Style A, #2356 -- Looking for info

Sorry, that should be 5283. it's the Style C that became Style 5280.

I don't believe I know of any Style A serial numbers above 3000. No. 2356 is most likely the last year of the run before the...
  18. Re: Lyon & Healy Style A #1674 1925 - looking for info

I'm looking at Hubert's book right now, and while the caption under this label on p. 110 does indeed say 1925, the text on p. 111 notes that the label was in use from 1922 to 1928. So, the photo on...
  19. Re: Lyon & Healy Style A, #2356 -- Looking for info

Precise serial number dating isn't a thing for L&H mandolins the way it is for Gibson.

According to the Washburn book, that label came into use in 1922 (but the book also says the earlier orange...
  20. Re: Lyon & Healy Style A, #2356 -- Looking for info

The label says Style A and not Style 5280, correct? Does it have a pull-out rest?

Could've had both of these on eBay in the past couple of days if I hadn't hesitated.
