  1. Re: Mandolins are 2-3x more than equivelent guitars?

BTW, a lot of people don't realize, there used to be a structural difference between an HD-28 and a D-28, the former with shifted, shaved braces (and you could easily hear the difference when playing...
  2. Re: Mandolins are 2-3x more than equivelent guitars?

A bigger market almost always means lower prices. The more widgets you make, the cheaper each one is.
  3. Re: There has got to be something better than Tabledit, right?

I was surprised to hear Bela Fleck say he didn't read music.
  4. Re: Hopefully better questions about Brazilian Rosewood

So, question answered, almost. For those of us who aren't builders, what's a set?
  5. Re: Hopefully better questions about Brazilian Rosewood

Important info, about CITES etc. But I'm also curious about the value. In my case, just for grins. Not long ago I bought a Steinway B built in 1892 that is Brazilian rosewood. I sometimes joke...
  6. Re: Lookie here, you may never see this again!!

Yeah, I suspect it's actually "$140K OBO". And the BO will be quite a big jump lower.

Re: Doers this tune already exist?

I think that anyone who writes much has this issue, in two ways

    1. writing "new" songs that aren't actually new
    2. writing songs that just seem so natural that they MUST have been done before, or...

Help for stage fright & essential tremor

I suffer from "essential tremor," and it gets worse every year. Lately I've had trouble playing stuff I'd previously had down, especially when folks are watching. (It's also increased by stress, of...

    Re: Buzzing amp

In my experience, playing electric guitar since the 70's, amps always buzz for magnetic pickups, if I'm not touching the strings or another grounding on the guitar. More or less buzzing depending on...

Re: 90% of us can’t do this.

If I could pick half as well as any of the above, I'd be grinning!

As it is, I think I look like I'm constipated most of the time when playing. Except when I goof, and then I smile. I get to...

Re: Do you apply oil to your fretboard?

I got pure lemon oil, sold for aroma therapy, for this purpose (and also for my piano, which is old Brazilian rosewood with recent tung oil finish.)

It sure smells nice when I use it.

    But then...

Re: Are Condenser mic’s worth the bother?

I agree with the general sentiment that for live playing, a dynamic is fine for a single instrument, but not for a single mic for all. Most dynamics we find in use are cardioid, but you'd need an...
  13. Re: Sam Bush and David Grisman named to the Bluegrass Hall of Fam

Sam is overdue, but Grisman, sheesh! He's been overdue since the 80's. Such a huge influence. But, probably in the minds of the old-schoolers until recently, a *bad* influence!

    My very favorite...
  14. Re: Maintenance of rosewood with tung oil finish

Not sure why the Youtube links don't work:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsjnRcmC840

What I can say about the finish is that it's not sealed --...
  15. Re: Maintenance of rosewood with tung oil finish

Thanks. The lemon oil I use is "pure lemon oil" for aroma therapy (not cheap, but not much is needed.)

Sadly the piano had to wait (wrapped up) in my garage for 5 months (waiting on a fork lift...
  16. Maintenance of rosewood with tung oil finish

This is actually a piano maintenance question. :-) I recently got a new (old) piano that is Brazilian rosewood. The previous owner was also the restorer (it was his wife's piano since 1990) and he...

    Re: Illustrated Mandolin Chord Bible

I agree with your choice to leave the nut out of the graphics. I think it would just cause more confusion, especially for beginners.

I see why others suggest making the fingering charts vertical,...

I use this wider dobro strap: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051UNCWW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?th=1

First I tried tying at the neck/body joint and found that the headstock was...

Re: Advantages of stereo matched pair?

MontanaMatt is correct: the primary purpose of a matched pair is to do either "XY" or "AB" stereo recording, so that you don't have a tonal imbalance between the left and right. (See...

Hey thanks! Nice to see that "Dawg Jazz / Dawg Grass" is finally available again. It's one of my favorites but hasn't been available for a long time. Fortunately I still have a digital copy from...

Re: Guitar flight case in overhead?

If they don't let you carry it on, you check it at the gate. It gets hand-packed below. After landing, it's usually in the jetway, along with the baby strollers as mentioned above. They give you a...

Re: Guitar flight case in overhead?

I'm surprised anyone finds any extra room in the overhead these days. Every flight I take, they're all full the the brim, with no empty seats. I can't imagine lugging a dreadnought onto such a...

Re: Jam Etiquette re: Playing Mandolin Chords

After trying all the above, also consider arpeggiating. That is, just play the chord notes one at a time; let 'em ring but only as long as that chord should be heard. This can fit nicely with...
  24. Re: How long does it take to get over fumble fingers?

    Bingo.

Occasionally adults have asked me about starting to play a (first) instrument as an adult. I'm always optimistic, but my reply is something like this. Children learn to play much more...
  25. Re: Gibson Must Now Face Antitrust Litigation in Heritage Case

They're only "forgeries" if they carry a dishonest label. That is not the case here. They may be "copies" but that is an entirely different thing.
