Well, you could swap out the light gauge strings for some heavier ones and watch your Washburn implode on you while you're fiddling with your strap attachment.

My (limited) experience with Ditson labeled mandolins has been that they've been good to very good instruments hopefully reflective of the company's good taste / good sense of working with outside...
I look forward to seeing your Martin / Ditson when you have a chance to post some pictures.
Our long-lost friend Jake Wildwood has images of a Ditson labeled Martin with their "B" style...
Fair play to you.
You'd think all the lost mandolins would have turned up found by now, but these kinds of serendipitous stories come up here on a more-than-occasional basis and always make me...
Great stuff, John and Bruce. Thanks for sharing.
Where's Martin?
We can't have a discussion here about Ceccherinis without Martin joining in. :)
Mick
Thanks, John and Bren...great tales.
I love this: "....They are unlocked and are open to anyone seeking shelter while walking or climbing in the Scottish mountains."
And the shared ethos of...
Thank you, John, for the music and video.
And now I know what a bothy is. True delights for the architect in me.
Mick
Thanks!
I dig the Waldo, front and center.

I've got a half dozen or more of these "Leland" model flatbacks with a few different labels, including one from Wurlitzer.
I've long been of the opinion that these were made by Vega.
Others...
Might be time to get a bowlback mandolin to help break your folks out of stereotypes of what a mandolin looks like, sounds like or plays like.
And I'll bet you'll enjoy it yourself!
Mick
Thanks, Nick....but alas I won't be bidding on this one.
Shipping costs from the UK to the USA have been exceedingly high and tend to scare me off from bidding on the many many interesting...

Thanks, Nick.
Always fun to see Dallas's work show up.
I've pulled out a warped top in this area on a Favilla bowlback using a method John Maddock (iirc) recommended...using a "heat pack" on...
The man has his Carhartt's on. ;)

My take on this headstock design is that the Vinaccia (who were early users) appropriated the idea from the common "Broken Pediment" feature in late Classical / Mannerist architecture. ...
Nick, weren't the common Waverly "cloud" tailpieces made in NYC?
Mick
Good call.
It may be a fine instrument in its own right.
I think we're just trying to suss out whether it is from some configuration of the Calace's output.
It may well be, but doesn't look...
I'm with John on this....these MOR Italian / Sicilian mandolins can be very nice players...if they are playable...and have a bright "shimmering sound" as our friend, Martin Jonas, so wonderfully put...
Well, fratres is Latin for brothers / fratelli and Neapoli is also the old Greek name for Naples / Napoli, which is also Neapolis in Latin
I've got a fair number of Fratres Calace mandolins in my...
The printing on the label looks a little rough / smeary in comparison to the 1901 Fratres C label attached.
Bad print? Bad copy?
The soundhole shape is a curious one.
Do you have other...
Thanks, Joe.
Yeah...I don't know what to say, really. You figure the Dogals are likely designed for bowldolas (and not archtops) but playing it safe is always the best way to go until you have a...
Tony and Joe,
What about the Dogal Calace set for EuroMandola?
Details:
Dogal Calace RW91A Mandola Carbon Steel Round Wound
Round Wound strings for Mandola made in co-operation with...
Why would someone care about Mike Compton's or some guy named Bill's opinion about whether to learn how to read music?
Seems like pretty bizarre logic to me.
If you want to do it,...
Beautiful mandolin, Nick, with some very un-L+H details. (eg neck profile, headstock shape, tuners)
What makes you think it comes from them?
Of course...L+H would be a reasonable bet for just...
