Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Looks like they simply rounded off the broken head scroll with the putty. It does make you wonder what sort of “professional” carried out the work!

    Re: Pickguard Mountain Brackets

Pins? - I think you need to make your own!

Bothe my Kimbles came with abbreviated pickguards and they are fixed with a pin and a small screw. I decided that I’d like a similar pickguard on my...
  5. Re: There are more pickers near me than I realised....

Hi Paul, RIP Ivan indeed - we hadn’t actually met for 40 odd years (MSG days) but we corresponded reasonably regularly.

Difficult to say what kind of music, I suppose you might call me a...

Re: Nature of instrument in 1845-1847 painting

Can’t we just accept that it’s just a god-awful painting of a mandolin?
  7. Re: Johs. Møller madolin with a strange positioned string cover.

By “stringcover”, I assume you’re talking about the “arm rest”. Could it be that it’s designed to be played in a standing position without a strap?
  8. Re: There are more pickers near me than I realised....

Hi Paul, we’ve not knowingly met but Ivan mentioned you several times.

Not been to Manchester since before the plague but I once walked into a gig in Buxton (20 miles south of Manchester) with my...

Re: Playability of a new Eastman 305 question

Many, largely European, mandolins use a “zero fret” but they also need a nut to keep the strings in place and in pairs.

I should have said in my previous post that, if all your strings are equally...

Re: Playability of a new Eastman 305 question

A trick for nut slots that are too low? A, now retired, luthier friend if mine made a new bridge and nut for a ‘14 A of mine but, played hard, it always seemed to buzz. At first I thought it was the...

    Re: Gibson Mandolin Bass

I remember the one Trevor had was priced at £7000 - largely because, at the time, he didn’t want to sell it.

    Re: Help with EQ/Frequency Issue

I suspect that the problem is not due to the mic itself but down to the physical transfer of vibrations passing through the mounting system - attach it to something other than the mandolin and see if...

Re: Always use a strap? Even when seated?

Always do, always have. You can simply let go of your instrument whilst you do something else - change picks, pick up a capo, take a drink etc. etc.

I remember the late Red Rector who never seemed...

Re: Gibson A-50 up for auction

There’s usually an additional premium to allow you to bid on-line but it’s usually considerably lower than the buyer’s premium. Add to that the seller’s premium and the auctioneer is on to a good...

    Re: Bridge Saddle Sag?

From your photo, the bottom of the saddle looks flat. If it is, isn’t it more likely that the top hasn’t been cut straight?

Re: Help identifying old Martin mandolin

I wouldn’t call it a “small top crack”. If you look at, and enlarge, the fuller picture of the top, you’ll see that it goes all the way from the soundhole to the tailpiece.

You might have quite a drive; they only have 3 in stock and they’re in London, Canterbury and Brighton.

    Re: This seems odd

BM apparently signed one of my mandolins - http://www.mandolinarchive.com/gibson/serial/23871 - there was no trace of the signature when I bought it; the shop owner had apparently removed it, but he...
