    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

Being heard is necessary but not sufficient. And its half full half empty thing. Are you not loud enough or are the others playing too loud. .. Or, get a resonator and just blast them.

    Re: Improvising

A thought came to me the other day. I think how to improvise kind of depends on what you mean to accomplish with your break.

You would approach improvising differently for each of these:

    Re: "Powerful/Loud!"

Volume is important, but not so much for "being heard" as for increased dynamic range. Playing beautifully, using dynamic range to play more expressively, is the goal. I have found that doing this,...

Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

I found just the opposite. I think I would have found the fiddle much easier if I hadn't been playing mandolin and been in the folk music community for all those years. The reason is I developed a...

    Re: Anyone taking online lessons?

There are many great teachers out there who have not joined a group or developed as big a following from performance, but who have a metric ton of insight, especially IMO at developing students from...

Re: What instrument is the hardest? My experience

While I applaud the effort you put into making sense of the chaos, I do not think your results are universal.

There are many individual differences that in large part determine or influence what...
  8. Re: Was the mandolin played in traditional folk before Bill Monro

[QUOTE=abalter;1737833]Right! That's what I'm trying to uncover. I think sometimes a mandolin at a traditionalist old-time session is looked at as not belonging--being a bluegrass instrument. /QUOTE]...

Re: Classically Trained, wanting to expand

Wow. Almost exactly my intended response. There are mandolin players thoroughly enmeshed in many of these other traditions, who are neither classically trained or bluegrass inclined.

    The pool is...

    Re: Picking faster?

    Here is a different take-

The dirty little secret is that playing fast is not all right hand. And if playing a tune fast is seeming like an athletic event, there are other things to attend to.

    Re: What's In Your Mind

When playing in public I use the freed up part of my brain to consider how to connect more with those listening. Catch their eye perhaps, or play louder, or look over at others on stage playing with...
  13. Re: How to choose a good F style mandolin when you are miles from

I would say that the first step is to give up the notion of "the right one" and just get one that you really really like. :)

    Re: What's In Your Mind

If I find myself mentally drifting, day dreaming while I play, I take it as a signal that I am phoning it in. That others can probably tell I am not into the tune, which is not at all what i want.

    Re: What's In Your Mind

I am not sure I agree with that, if I get your meaning. The goal of learning tunes is be able to play them, with less and less effort perhaps, but I am not sure about muscle memory. If I am playing...

    Re: Jam etiquette

It depends on the kind of jam, bluegrass, old time, Irish, country, sing along, whatever.

I would say one has to hang in and listen for a while to see how it goes. No two jams are exactly the same...
