  1. Re: Handel: Sarabande in D Minor (La Folia), mandolin quartet

I can see what you mean about the second version being bassier. I like both. My slight preference would be for the original, but then I'm listening on earphones too right now. I'm sure you're right...

Re: What is the "Must Have" Mandolin Book(s)?

Excellent suggestions from everyone! But strangely omitted (perhaps it just goes without saying...?) has been Paul Sparks, The Classical Mandolin. This is a great where-to-start book if you're...

    Re: A la Russe

Happy to see this piece mature so beautifully in the hands of such fantastic artists as Ferdinand and Het Consort. A huge round of applause to them all! :)

New Book of Evelyn Castiglioni's Tunes

Evelyn's books over the past 5 years, ever since her first "Evelyn's Big Book 2015," have been a great source of wonderful arrangements of mostly traditional tunes, with a few originals scattered...

  12. Re: Thomas Tallis: Hear The Voice And Prayer (c. 1560)

Thank you for clarifying--the "borrowed" music from motet to Mass was very common so I assumed that was what I saw. I did think the part lines for the "Kyrie" seemed just like the motet, which I have...
  13. Re: Thomas Tallis: Hear The Voice And Prayer (c. 1560)

My choirs sang Tallis motets including this little masterpiece (back when I wasn't so retired). The score I see is the Kyrie from a mass Tallis composed based on the motet "Hear the voice and...

    Re: Maggie May mando?

Well, I didn't play the mando part on Maggie May; I've never been to England, know nothing about rock'n'roll, and have limited studio experience anyway. I also don't own one of the butt-ugly...

    Re: Common Chord shapes

Understood, Martin. It might be helpful to explain that in my thinking, the context of that 7th chord is "root on 3rd string" chords.

Easily moveable chords with root on 3rd rather than 4th...

  18. Re: Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680): Modo hypodorico

For what it's worth, I really love some L'Arpeggiata albums, and I sometimes feel their taking of liberty is too liberal. (Their take on Handel as crossover material didn't at all work for me, e.g.)...
