Best of luck on your project, and I'm so glad you plan to share your progress. I will be following with interest. My Louise is in need of some refreshment, and I'm a rank beginner at attempting such...

    Re: ArtistWorks 5 Day Challenge?

I had the same problem when I tried once before to sign up for a 5-day offering at ArtistWorks. I checked tabs, spam, all the usual suspects at that time and found nothing. I just moved on. You and...

You mean to base the decision on practical matters? What a great idea! Thanks!

Re: Cleaning crud on a 1930s mandolin

Indeed, train songs. The rest of that note reads:
Wreck of '97 (as you surmised)
    Little Red Caboose
    Orange Blossom Special

[and then a medley of non-train songs]

Re: Cleaning crud on a 1930s mandolin

Undiluted Simple Green did a respectable job cleaning gunk from Louise, the old Maxwell I bought recently. I don't believe I will need to resort to naptha.

By the way, she is in rougher shape...

Re: Cleaning crud on a 1930s mandolin

I removed the tuners last night, so I do have a good testing spot available to me. I will report back. Thanks, guys!

    Re: Newb's first day

Welcome, LRDave! It sounds like you've had a successful first day with your new mandolin. The thing to remember about those fingertip blisters is this: Once the blisters have developed into calluses,...

Cleaning crud on a 1930s mandolin

I've used warm water and a gently-applied washcloth to no avail. To remove decades of user buildup, from what I've read here, it appears I should next try mild soap and water, and failing that,...

You Guys!! I took the Collings (Phoebe) out yesterday to play and three of the strings were in tune! I nearly had a coronary.

I've seen the shape called "Venetian" style but I think that may have been a Kay Kraft thing.

    Nomd

My new old mandolin arrived today. She's an SS Maxwell from the 1930s, in decent condition for an old girl in her 90s. She came with a nice case and some interesting "documentation," too.

    I need...

Re: Help me identify this mandolin!

If the person asking the question is not knowledgeable about mandolins, then that person has no way to know that the name "The Gibson" isn't enough to identify the instrument.
    Maybe we could...

Re: No love for old Martins?

Well, Sue, that mandola is indeed gorgeous. Out of my league, too, I'm afraid--especially since we have been frequent visitors at our vet's office with a sick pup for the past 10 days or so.

    That...

Wait. What? I'm only supposed to consider buying a mandolin when I'm "in the market"? Sue, could you please tell me how to get to this mythical "out of the market" place? I can't seem to find it. ;)
