Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

This one really has some issues:

  2. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

The danger is the headstock resting on the support there. You really want all contact with the case to stop at fret 2 - no closer to the headstock than that. A sideways knock here could cause that...
  3. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Yep, I don't see the fiberglass ones available. But even the Eastman plywood case that came with my MD515 works with the shorter neck. The tuners are clear of the accessory compartment, the neck...
  4. Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

    A cautionary tale.

My F4 came in this case, half way around the world. Not the original case obviously, but seemed good enough for travel:

Took it to see a luthier this weekend, and...

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

Thanks Mike. I'm in New Zealand, so I'm limited to what turns up locally. It's good to know what to look out for though. Thanks!

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

Thanks, good tips. Definitely not aiming for "as-new". It's period correct for my '21 F4 which is in good player condition. I'd really like it to be a functional sturdy case that looks 100 years old...

    Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

I'm about to start restoring an early 20s F-Case. Among a myriad of things, it's missing a handle.

    Does someone do a replacement?

    Thanks,
    Bazz.
  10. Re: Stan Jay, Pioneer of Vintage Instrument Fame Fighting For His

When I was a kid (11 or 12) my uncle used to get their mail catalogues - early 80s I loved visiting my uncle's place and pouring over them.

When the time came I to buy my first real guitar, in my...

    Re: Blonde F-4

There are 3 F4s at Carters currently.

As well as the blonde, they have a 1935 model, and a beautifully refinished blacktop for $3250 - a great player's price and stunning looking too!

    Re: Loars at Carterís

Pre 1940 5-string banjos are rare. Five string banjo really wasn't a thing in the 20s/30s. The majority (by a long shot) of 5-string banjos from this era were originally 4-strings, with new necks...

    Re: Loars at Carterís

More to the point, there aren't 17 Martin D45s waiting out there to be bought.

There aren't 17 1958-1960 Les Pauls waiting out there to be bought.

    If there's a glut in anything, it's Loar F5s....

    Re: Loars at Carterís

Without much effort I found 17 Loars currently listed for sale online.

    All 100K+

Maybe there's 17 pickers out there wanting to spend that much, but judging by how long these have been listed...

Re: No frills vs fancier mandolins

Do vintage Gibson A oval holes sound better than vintage Gibson F oval holes?

No. 100% no. Despite being four times the price.

Are they worth four times the price? Yes.

    I can't find one...

It helps that my city has been in lockdown for 7 weeks. WAY too much time on my hands....! ;)
  21. Re: Made a Bone Saddle for my F4. Big Improvement!

The original saddle was a 50s Gibson replacement, and the saddle was quite short. And rosewood, so a softer wood. Fully understand that would warp over time.

The Cumberland had the short "lowboy"...
  22. Made a Bone Saddle for my F4. Big Improvement!

Thought this might be interesting to a few here like me who have recently bought F2s and F4s and not been completely wowed by the sound.

When I first got my 21 it had this, with a major sag:

  23. Re: Left forearm tendonitis? Or something else?

Well a week without playing any mandolin has fixed things somewhat.

Still a slight ache, but much better. Resting, icing.
