Re: Lyon & Healy mandocello strings?

The Thomastik mandocello strings (Set 1804) work fine on a L&H mandocello. It's what I've used on mine for years and years. I wouldn't use anything else for love or money.
  2. Re: “Washburn” vs “Lyon and Healy" branded style A mandolin valu

I think there may be one value inflection point between earlier vs. later L&H/Washburn mandolins, which is when they switched from varnish to a lacquer finish. I presume the varnished examples would...

    Re: Room Humidifier recs

I've owned a LOT of room humidifiers over the years, to humidify the room where I keep my instruments. You want a unit with a digital hygrometer. But the sad truth is that it's hit or miss finding...

Re: T-I strings for K4 type Mandocello

Thomastik only makes one set of mandocello strings, set 1804. So you don't have the choice of light/medium/heavy, like you do for mandolins.

I use Thomastik strings (and only Thomastik strings)...

    Re: Lyon an Healy?

That's a Lyon and Healy Style B (NOT a Pacific Rim instrument at all). A desirable and beautiful instrument. Built circa 1920's (a picture of the label would allow dating more precisely).

I believe that mandolin was last sold by Mandolin Brothers and is pictured at the far right of the postcard MB used to sell featuring three or so D'Angelico mandolins and one D'Aquisto. Hard to tell...

Re: What's my wife gonna do with all these mandolins?

You get a step up in basis at death. For really high-end instruments, it is better to die owning them than to sell during your life and pay capital gains (assuming you are not subject to estate...

    Re: Guernsey's guitar auction

Mandocello starting bid was definitely $7,500 yesterday. I agree with Martin that the new starting bid is crazy, but that seems to fit in with the general pricing strategy of the auction.
