Re: Bowl Back Mandolin needing some TLC

I would suggest bringing it to a qualified luthier who can assess the damage and suggest a repair.

    Re: mandobass plan

Last year, I asked Hillary James about her mandobass. This is what she told me:

My bass was made in Bournemouth, England by Robin Greenwood.

Re: Ebay - A model, lost cause?

Good for a $100 experiment in lutherie, to undo both normal wear and ill-advised abuse. But at $650, I'd say forget it.
  6. Re: My wife has stored it for years,no markings I can see

Does it really have a two-piece top instead of a bent top? The photos make it look as if the top's wood grain isn't continuous across both sides of the bend. If so, that's the first "bent top"...

Re: Arm rest. Y or N?

The armrest I installed on my 1914 Gibson A reminds me to hold the instrument in the correct position. Otherwise, I tend to hug it, the way I played the Carl Fischer bowlback I learned on.

    Re: Playing with wrist/thumb pain

I've been able to cut back over the years. I now take one 220mg tablet twice a day. Ten years ago, I was taking THREE twice a day, along with horse-pill aspirins. My doctor wasn't thrilled with...

    Re: Playing with wrist/thumb pain

I've been taking Naproxen twice a day for years to cut the pain in various arthritic joints -- including the bases of both thumbs. I hope that works for you.

So, just to complete the circle -- the spot never reappeared and there was no damage at all to my mando.

Re: We don't need no steenking flat picks!

Radim Zenkl is a very talented finger-picker. If you check out his music, you'll find pieces for which he puts down his flatpick.

    Re: Playing with wrist/thumb pain

Some thumb pain is the result of pinched nerves in the C-6 area of your neck. I do daily neck-stretching exercises to control it, usually reasonably well. If your pain doesn't clear up, you might...
