    Re: Old v New

If the 30 year old mandolin is in good solid shape it most likely was well built. The sound would be the deciding factor for me.

Re: Kate Wolf Accompanied By Two Mandolins 1985

Randy sat in with our blues band around 20 years ago. It was a fun night and he does blues, as well as jazz, quite well.

    Re: pointy vs round picks.

I used a round pick for years, but have come full circle and back to Wegen TF100. I thin them down some as I like the sound better thinner. Sometimes I may use the round when using a p/u as it is...

    Re: Electric Mandolin Buzzing

If you have a tone control you need to ground that too. If you are plugging it in with the p/u out it may buzz even grounded as there is no shielding. Sometimes an appliance running or light on a...

Poll: Re: ISO info Re: Vintage Stella Mandolin

Be sure when you put new strings on you use very light gauge strings. Normal mandolin strings will damage the instrument.

Re: Old Gibson Mandolins in UK

My A5 has the same strings, same scale length and same action as my Gibson A2. Each plays very easy, no need for an F5 to play any harder than an F2.

Re: Kate Wolf Accompanied By Two Mandolins 1985

I used to have the concert recorded, probably have it somewhere, but no way to play it. Randy Sabien and Nina Gerber, great addition to Kate. I think she was already diagnosed before she played that...

    Re: Half a mandolin question

I never put mandolin strings on a banjo/mandolin. I use two sets of tenor banjo strings with the heaviest string a 28. Sounds good and waaay better than the brash sound you get with heavier stings....

    Re: No pickguard finish scratches

The ebony guard on my mandolin is worn a lot and would be really bad on the top. 10+ years of gigging and a lot of playing/jamming when not gigging.

    Re: Shop goodwill flatiron

I thought it might be a reflection too, but it's the same reflection in two different shots. One only showing the bottom of the neck near the heel, but the same gloss in the center.

    Re: Shop goodwill flatiron

It could be someone has sanded the sides leaving the middle glossy. Not sure why they would do that, but if they grafted in new wood why spray only the new wood and not the whole neck? Looks weird...

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

Unitune is the next best thing to a Peterson. It can be a regular tuner or a more accurate strobe tuner. They are also not too expensive, $28.99 at Sweetwater. The Polytune is more expensive and not...

Re: 1917 Gibson A "Mint Condition"

If you have a different gauge of strings, or the humidity has swollen the instrument and changed the action, the intonation will change even if it was right when you bought it.

Re: recommend me an acoustic bass

A 1/2 bass will sit in the seat like a person if you do it right. I could get it in my Honda civic. They sound quite good and are loud enough, especially for just a mandolin.

Re: glue for temporary attachment of copper inlay

Nearly any glue will release with heat, especially on copper. Copper heats easily and evenly. Thin any glue, hide, titebond, whatever and heat will even more easily release it.

    Re: Gibson String Height

Per my post above it should be 2/64 on the E and 3/64 not 32 on the G. I usually measure in 32's and didn't make the change when I typed it, sorry.

    Re: Gibson String Height

I have mine setup low, but I wouldn't do it this low for everyone as it can get finicky with humidity changes. I am willing to do what it takes to keep it low. It is just showing the line at 2/32 for...

    Re: Which Budget Fingerstyle Guitar?

The New York Martins were one of the few wider neck acoustics available at the time, other than a classical guitar. They made a few 0 and 00 both in the NY model. I think they had a 1 7/8' nut if I...

    Re: Which Budget Fingerstyle Guitar?

When these were made there weren't a lot of smaller guitars suited for finger style. You would have to buy something old. When I quit dreads I bought a 1924 0-28K Martin. Never played anything bigger...
