    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

Ah, I see what you mean. It doesn't exactly look original - the protrusion at the flat end is presumably intended to slot into something but, with the fixed point being the screw/hole, it doesn't...

    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

By “bellplate” I assume you mean the tailpiece cover. These need to be taken off to change/replace strings and can easily be lost/replaced. The mandolin doesn’t look to have been played that much as...

    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

There are several catalogues on the ibanez.com website from the 1960s here - https://www.ibanez.com/eu/support/catalogs/ - the ones from 1960 and 1964 feature mandolins but none of them is anything...

    Re: Arlo Guthrie Retirement

The nearest I got to see him was a few years ago in York (the old one not the new one!) but I missed it. I also turned down a ticket to see the Beatles live in Blackpool!

    Arlo Guthrie Retirement

Not quite sure where to post this so, if the mods would prefer it elsewhere, that’s fine by me.

Never did get to see him live!

Re: What is this? Gibson-ish Mandolin

.... and I’m sure the buyer will be very happy with it (for now).

    Re: The Myth of Perfection

The trouble with perfection is that it can make the end result seem bland. In a similar way, modern recording techniques tend to seek perfection whereas many live recordings have greater character.

Re: Buffing Out Marks in Nitrocellulose Finish?

I think it’s likely that the “some sort of plastic” is vinyl. It’s common knowlege that vinyl plays havoc with nitro. finishes and it occasionally came in things like cheap straps and convenient...

    Re: George Harrison's fretless guitar

If anyone's still interested, it was originally over-valued and sold for £237,562 including the auction house's charges. I'll let somebody else work out what the hammer price was - clearly too much!

    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

I bought my 524 in 1976; yes they were a small fortune but it was the best that was available in the UK at the time and it was perfectly set up straight out of the box (I knew the bloke in the shop...

    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

    The 513 was actually a two pointer with a maple back - http://s93105080.onlinehome.us/Ibanez-Catalogs/catalog/1976-6/06.jpg - but the 512 I mentioned -...
  14. Re: Help..problem with strap and looking for ideas.

£4.55 + £8.00 shipping to the UK! Apare from the “Fender” logo, swing top bottle washers are identical. The shop I bought mine from has them in stock for £0.20 each and a packet of 10 wouldn’t cost...
  15. Re: Help..problem with strap and looking for ideas.

Assuming the endpin isn’t going to pop out, you can buy the d’Addario gismos as Lucas suggests but there is a far more enjoyable solution - Grolsch bottle stopper washers; i.e. you drink the beer,...

Re: Clifford Essex Flat Back Mandolin 1920s?

Ah! “Johnny Roadhouse Music” - better known as the Manchester branch of “Hobgoblin”. A popular place (in non-covid times) for traditional instruments in this part of the world and, nowadays,...

    Re: Old ibanez mandolin

One of their cheaper models. Probably a derivative of their 512 model from 1976 although I suspect that your particular one could be later.

More likely to appeal to somebody who’d rather look at it than play it.
  20. Re: on Reverb: When a scroll isn't a scroll, or is it?

Just wondering when it was built - can’t find any reference to in the usual sources. Don’t remember seeing one before.

Re: What is this amazing-looking instrument?

You need a “alicate para torcer cordas“. It’s one instrument I’ve so far resisted, I can reccoment listening to the Fado music of “Mariza” - a bit like bluegrass with more chords!

    Re: Octave Mandolin -

As Nevin has said, the position of the bridge isn’t negotiable - it should be just as far from the 12th fret as is the nut. Some players rest a finger on the top of their instrument SE of the sound...

    Re: Kimble two point reviews?

Intrigued as to why somebody would have owned seven Kimbles? I assume you don’t still own seven of them (I only have two) but what was wrong with the ones you no longer own?
