Valentich strings on the mando-bass
That is a Vega Tenor Lute. It's basically a 4-string G-mandola with a banjo style neck and headstock. The strings are from a Thomastik Liuto set.
Thanks for the mention, Brad. A little clarification. I played with the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra for over thirty years and there were a bunch of Vegas played by members of the group. The...
Beautiful photos!
I'm not a bass player and I use Thomastik strings on my mandolins and mandolas. Their mando-cello strings are too short for my mando-cello. I never tried their bass strings.

I'm pretty sure that I saw this mando years ago, but only a full-frontal shot. There are a lot of design features that point to the luthiers at the Waldo Co. The fingerboard shape and everything...
I studied with Walter in early July of 1985. I went with the Bauers' daughter and her children on the 4th to a nearby Park for the Independence Day celebration. I'm sorry, but I don't remember her...
Thanks for sharing the photos!! That's a new one for me. It's unusual and as a Vega fan, your f-hole, 2-pt cylinder-back mandolin is a treat to see. The Vega serial-number list that I use dates the...
The two catalogs mentioned both have a lot of good info, but they don't cover everything Vega. Neither the bowlback nor the CB Vega catalog has a reference to the Vega mando-bass. There were two Vega...
Great thread!!! What a handsome mando!!
I think I read that the instrument doesn't have a label. Was it a one-off, prototype or a shrunk-down sample?
Most mando-basses were built for use in...
I'm reluctant to disagree but here's something to consider:
An early fixed-bridge, flat-back, Vega mando-cello that resides in the UK showed up on the Café a few years ago. Fortunately for this...
Interesting. I don't know if the serial numbers on electric Vega mandolins relate to the older serial numbers we've been relying on. Maybe they don't.
Vega started marketing their CB mandolins in...
I am curious about the FIGA catalog. I have not seen anything they've done in the last 30 years. I saw their Walter Kay Bauer catalog back then. Also, FIGA was banjo-centric at the time. I welcome an...
Sorry for the pokey responding - I found the concert program for and a review of that Guild convention in the February 1903 Cadenza on pages 37-39. Jim, there is even a little complimentary verbiage...
[QUOTE=dschrum;1185775]Can anyone give me information on Bandurrias made by Vega?
I would LOVE to find out more about this bandurria! More photos. Is there a serial number punched into the top...
The Vega with a carved top reminded me of a Martin 2-15 mandolin. The headstock on the "carved-top Vega" looks like a vintage Vega, but that's about it at first glance. I would like to know if this...
For fans of antique Vega mandolin-family instruments, the Wisconsin•Vega Project is ongoing. There are some samples of the Vega sound on https://soundcloud.com/user-708668523. The Vega...
I have had a tenor (plectrum) lute for years and always thought of it as a kind of odd hybrid, part banjo part octave mandola. This 6-string is a great surprise.
My first thought was that it was...
