Re: How much do you practice?

Much like Joey, I'm doing an hour daily.
Your fingers will adapt to the pressure if you give them time and don't overdo it - injury is not the way, pain is a warning sign that is there for a reason....
  2. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

As for the age spectrum, I suspect there is a filter at work here. After all, this is not electric guitars.

Assuming you start playing at an age when the mandolin slowly looms out of the mists of...
  3. Re: “Tuonne taakse metsämaan” (“To the woodland far away”)

Very interesting - one pick plus one finger? As technique makes the instrument, this mandolin plays out of the box by far

    Re: Alternate tunings?

errhhh... supposing you mean CGDA, capo the 5th fret and you're there. Winding up a 4th without a capo would require lighter strings.

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

Yes, since a pick is really supposed to integrate with arm, hand and fingers to make a complete sensory perception, thus integrating with procedural memory as well, we are all in different places in...

Re: Why do you like the picks you like?

Clayton Ultem 0.56 because of their grainy raspiness and bright overtones. If the galaxy has a dry, woody center, I am in the outer rim...

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

You mean, just like Brylcreem fills the space between hairs, music theory fills the space between the ears?

    Re: One Mandolin - forever...

should I ever meet an OM that's better than my Fylde Touchstone, I might reconsider, but this didn't happen for almost 20 years now, so it's unlikely.

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

Not at all - it nicely demonstrates what I said above. That has always bothered me - whenever I asked music theorists for a simple rule or formula, they rained me with cryptic examples. I half...

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

Yes, I only wish the nomenclature would be as consistent. Instead, math is hidden under a jungle of letters and funny little symbols. You have to blaze your way through a lot of musicologistic...

Re: "Playing the circle of fifths"

Exactly my impression of music theory all these years.

Well, there was a time when I hoped you could use music theory to construct stunning musical beauty mathematically* - that would have...
  14. Re: No mandolin content: Nursing musical grudges?

It is in times like this that people suddenly find themselves in charge to regulate things they never needed to know and have no chance of learning about at such short notice.

    I am recognizing...
  15. Re: how often do you refill your humidifier?

this was the first winter I went completely without humidification. Very wet and mild. This seems to be the way of the future.

Half expected to see Captain Jack Sparrow run past (slightly laid back). We might see a whole new fashion wave with masks.

Re: Thinking of buying a second mandolin

On this journey, reason already whizzed past you long ago. When sliding into the dark dungeons of MAS, rationale is the thing to avoid - why not give in, enjoy the ride and hope the perfect one will...

    Re: I Hate Playing Chords

I have been there, but the way out of Melody Metropolis leads through the Domain of Doublestops. Eventually, Chord Country looms on the horizon. Today, I play it all mingled together.

    Re: Charmed life picks

They look good, but seem to be too heavy for my purposes. I'm on Clayton Ultem triangles 0.56 and happy with them - I have found how long I can play each corner before the pick breaks in the middle,...

Was it not the dream expressed in so many BG songs to live on your own in some remote cabin, or hide in in some lonesome parlor where the sun don't never shine? Now is the time to live our dreams.
