    I have a mandola with a flat top. It works well on that one.

    I have another with a carved top that is fairly flat where the fingerboard meets the body.
    A little padding on one side works fine.

    Audacity gets a bum rap from a lot of people but it is so easy to use
    with a ton of plug-ins available.

    A violin teacher of mine (over 40 years ago) required me to routinely record myself with a cassette recorder.

    Man, was that ever painful to listen to! But very instructive.

    Sounds like 60 cycle hum.

    There are plenty of YouTube videos about this.

    It's usually shielding or grounding.
