Re: New Mandolin Day - Ellis

Is that you reflected in the back? Just kidding ;)
The TV image looks like a faint Ken R. SilverAngel painting.

    Enjoy the new acquisition!
    Happy pickin

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld string weights

I tried the stark set on my Ratliff, which is a very loud and responsive F5. The strings were very comfortable to play, they reduced overall volume a little bit. The tone was on the dark side, more...

Re: Because of course she is....

Is there a way to find my top play? I get a Spotify list of the year, but not sure it's in order. My favorite on the list is Minorsville by Baldassari.

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

Me Montana? What did I mention about primetone? I find primetones uninspiring. My preference is BC for most usages, and Casin for recordings.

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

I had my band all switch to Peterson stroboclip, our sound got way better. When we play in B, and the guitar capos 4, I tune my mando to capo 4 and it sounds great.

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

Bologna (English idiom for incredulity). No way in a gig setting I would take to time to get a bass, banjo, guitar, and mandolin in tune with each other, with crowd noise and beer involved. I can't...

    Re: Tuner...not Tuners

Peterson Stroboclip, very accurate, has special micro tuning adjustments that can modify your tuning for different keys...making playing in B actually sound better, well the intonation, not the...
  13. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

I don’t understand what is giving some trouble with string changes? If you have bad technique, learn how to do it properly. It only takes a half hour even if you take your time. Thinking that...

Re: Picked up a fiddle recently..

Few worse violin teachers exist than the untrained self-teacher. It is a very non-intuitive machine.

Re: Picked up a fiddle recently..

I got here the other way. I started violin at age ten, and didn't know what a mandolin was until I was in my mid twenties. I remember being scolded by my instructor for holding my violin like a...
  17. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

Are you really only changing strings once every three years?
Perhaps your mando has been quite due to dead strings.

Another thought, why did you take all the strings off? It works well, nay,...

    Re: Classifieds

I, for one, get a kick out of how many mandolins are marketed as "wide open, woody, woofs like a dog, hoss, banjo killer "
The pictures and descriptions are marketing, the price is the bottom line...

Casin is a great low click material. I just started picking with a BC TAD 3R 40, almost no click.

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

It's a pretty cheap experiment, only a bit more than string selections...
You could try different mandolins in your tone quest. That gets pricey.

Re: PEEK Pick by EML Picks

I don't have a peek yet, but do have a eml casin, is is a very buttery warm sounding pick. Very nicely made, and a worthy addition to my collection.
