  2. Re: Why did Jimmy Martin prefer the sound of the F4 over the F5?

While I can't shed any light on why Jimmy used the F-4 rather than an F-5, I've always thought that his use of the F-4 led him to use the snare drum to more than make up the lack of an F-5 type chop....

    Re: The Flintstones Cartoon Theme

Great to see. I've been fingerpicking on guitar as a rag. I got the idea from the George Barnes CD on Acoustic Disc.

    Re: Jimmie Rodgers songs

In reference to Evan Reilly's mention of Decca proposed issue of a Monroe set of Jimmie Rodgers songs: It actually did see the light of day albeit as a bootleg release in the early 70's. I've got it...

    Re: Doug Unger Pocket Mandolin

The pochette is great...but I'm a big fan of Doug's work. He's quite possibly the best inlay/engraving artist alive or dead. I also love the Nationals. We have similar taste. I have a full size Unger...

    Pocket Mandolin Doug Unger

Doug Unger, an old friend who builds mandolins and banjos, recently sent me this photo of a half a dozen Pocket Mandolins he's been working on. I thought someone here would find these of interest.

    Re: Guitar and Mandolin Duos

While I agree with all the above (especially Skaggs & Rice, The Blue Sky Boys & Northside Allstars) I'd like to add Lloyd and Floyd, the Armstrong Twins.

I've never met a Strad-O-Lin I didn't like. They still turn up for $300 or less.

    Re: Snark tuners damaging finish

Like most things I buy, I immediately threw the instructions away and promptly left my Snark tuner on the headstock. The mark it left on my headstock was annoying but not unbearable. Next trip to the...

    Re: Doug Unger Mandolin??

I first met Doug around 1970 or so and have been good friends since then. I own two of his banjos and one of his mandolins. I've also seen other banjos and mandolins he's made, a torch and wire F-2...

Re: Strings for National RM-1 mando.

When I picked up my National I tried a couple of different types of strings before settling in on the Jazz Mando JM-11s. They take just a little of the edge off the resonator sound. I find they have...

  13. Re: The Ladies of Blue Grass, Past and Present....who are they?

The "Sunny Mountain Girl" was Gloria Belle. She's still playing according to her website.

Also, let's not forget the Stonemans: Roni, Donna and Patsy.

Re: Hey, It's a JUMBO, more for your money!

The idea that someone went to so much work, using whatever that could get their hands on, makes it a piece of folk art to me. I've seen a few other similar attempts at F-5s that were just as...

Re: Nudie Rhinestone suits.....what in the world?

I've always wanted one of those suits....In fact, last year for Halloween, I bought a western style sport coat and added my own fringe and cut out my name in white tape to apply to my J-45.

I can also recommend a mandocello from Wishnevsky with the following caveat: When he built mine I asked him not to finish it. I then took it to a trusted luthier to finish. When he saw it, he not...
