I really WANT to like the Tortis, but the bevel on the edge (standard or speed) just doesn't do it for me. How about just a nice rounded edge, nothing more? I have a Tortis I'm going to try to work...
Half Day Bluegrass Band -- Chicago, IL
That's very sad, I'm sorry. If the disease you mentioned is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, then indeed his outlook is poor. Some information on this disease can be found at...
http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Ain't that the truth?[/QUOTE]
I asked Jimmy when he played a show here recently and he said he tends to get a new Rigel every few...
IMO whatever position you're more relaxed in, use that one. My fingers naturally curl in to a loose fist, so I use the loose fist. The mechanical engineer in me wanted to use the open hand instead,...
Here's a tip that seems to help for switching between G & D chop chords (7-5-2-3 and 7-4-5-2), or any I-V changes using these same chord forms. Keep your pinky down on the G string while switching...
It amazes me too watching some guys who have a huge swing but manage to pick the right strings, and do it with gusto.
I tend to pick with more economy of motion than that, but gradually my picking...
Mark, have you taught him to back talkwards yet?
I got mine with a second mortgage. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I still can't believe my wife went along with the idea.
Everyone has bad gigs. And you were sick to boot. Nothing to worry about.
I'll offer a piece of advice. I'm not presuming this applies to you, but if it does... never go up on stage with the focus...
I've got a Tonegard for my Old Wave F, and one for the Rigel CT110. There seems to be a benefit in volume and tone, though how much is subjective. I don't use a Tonegard for my Gibson F, simply...
While known more for jazz than bluegrass, Jethro could certainly play bluegrass and he used a Fender thin pick.
I recently heard a local mando picker and he had a good snap to his sound. I...
Skippy, that mandolinist wouldn't go by the name of Bruce, would he? If so, yes I agree he's a fine picker and really can crosspick with the best of them. Our bands cross paths now and then.
My wife, who humors my mando compulsion but isn't very musical herself, came with me to the last Kamp I went to (more than several years ago). It was okay -- she did't get to do all she wanted to do...
Nickel Creek isn't bluegrass. You shouldn't use a capo on mandolin. Tone-bars are a much better design than cross-bracing. Virzis suck. Monroe wouldn't have played it that way.
Sorry...
Can't get enough of that wonderful Duff!
Unless I missed it, nobody mentioned that Chesapeake recorded this tune. Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin.
Perhaps the most effective exercise for improvement has been recording myself on stage, listening and identifying weaknesses and problems. Secondly, practicing with a metronome or Band In A Box or...
I really liked the ProPlec as well, but I found that the edges wear too quickly for me. Wegen makes a pick in the same shape that I've been using instead.
I have developed my own style. It's taken years to perfect the right amount of bad timing, sloppiness and muffed notes to achieve it, but I'm there!...
That's mine my focus lately as well. I can't really impart much wisdom on this, but I've realized a few things. Instinctively (at least for me) when I feel I need to pick harder, I tend to grip the...
I've been recording off the board to a minidisc at our gigs and that's worked great. I transfer the Minidisc recording to CDs via my computer and Soundforge with no problems.
My Sony MD though is...
Lynn's band opened up the show without her and did 4-5 songs. The Lynn came out and they did another 4 songs or so, and then she left the stage again. She was a little pitchy at times, but she gave...
You must be talking about the Woodstock Opera House show. I was there and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lynn's band is great. What a surprise to see David MacLaughlin playing guitar. Brock is a superb...
