I stuffed up the finish, sanded it down to start again and the top ended up too thin and it wouldn't stay in tune for very long.

The other nice thing about zero frets is that (within reason) its difficult to cut the slots in the nut too deep. If you possibly can, though, deepen the slots with the nut off the instrument. Royal...
I think Richard/pops1 are correct. It's going to have to be repaired. It depends on your budget, but it would probably be possible to get it rechromed. I might look at the historic motor vehicle...

This is the complete instrument. The top isn't really strong enough, and there's a wedge between the centreblock and the brace under the bridge which makes it very quiet - a good thing...
I duplicated the problem with an electric guitar, so it must be something very strange in the environment/amp/cable. As a result I've stopped worrying for the moment.
Earthing the strings would be...
Little bit of a strange thing with my home build. I've fitted a basic magnetic pickup and a volume potentiometer, and whilst it's reasonable at full volume, if I turn the volume knob down just a tad...
Cured epoxy is very unlikely to take up dye in any great quantity, and certainly not at the same rate as the wood. I've worked with epoxy a lot on boats, but I'm not sure it would be my first choice...
Thanks people. So I haven't got a mislabelled bottle or anything. Is anyone familiar enough with their range to suggest whether there is a nice pure red in there? My enthusiasm for buying a few more...
Thanks, that's very much what I'm getting.
Do any of you have experience with their red leather dye? I bought some for an electric guitar and so far I'd describe the results as being more pink to purple rather than red. It's rather...
Seems sensible to me.
I modify all my instrument cases so the body is fully supported all round, although I try and leave the headstock in air and incapable of contacting anything. I seem to treat...
Seems like.
Which is why they don't travel by Ups. The more interesting question is that if there were a shipping company that guaranteed individual handling, extra care, complete restitution of any damage etc...
Well, update. After an interval spent mainly making furniture (don't ask) I was able to get back to it. The instrument certainly stabilised, and stays in tune, but there was still a vague soggy...
Do they charge extremely high rates? The gold standard service would be that we paid an individual to individually courier an instrument in a single vehicle from door to door. Think about what that...
A good complete set of photos all round, back and front and also some less close up would almost certainly aid things. Give a better idea of the construction.
But yes, neck extensions are quite...
Im not quite clear on your current status. You have pickup removed completely, otherwise all wiring complete, and you get loud buzz when plugging instrument to amp?
If you're not getting any change moving around IME it's unlikely to be shielding, radio pickup etc, so perhaps pointing at a wiring problem. You know, I presume that the foil needs to be connected to...
An interesting thread, because I am breaking top strings like crazy on the new Mandolin I've just built. They are all breaking at the neck of the loop. I've never been in the habit of breaking...
Is it the MT10 kit with a single Telecaster like pickup? I've embarrassed myself checking pickups with a multimeter, you do need to get resistance set to the right range or you see nothing.
But as...
Thanks folks. I'll see how it settles down then. It has got a gentle arch to the top, but only two or three mm.
In my head I can imagine having a tiny dart in the centreline join to give a bit of...
I've made myself a little flat top, and I reckon I've got a problem with the top flexing too much. It's still early days, but it needs to go through the strings twice to get them back in tune from...

Progressing slowly. No electrics, half finished bridge and nut that has one low string and one buzzing. More practice needed. Not unhappy with the tone so far, but it's louder would...
Not only that, but it's a line artificially drawn at a point in time. Go back in time far enough and species merge, go forward in time and they split. And sometimes even split and merge again...
