    Re: Why Mandolin?

It was Mando or banjo. My Dad played mandolin and my grandmother played frailing banjo. It’s an Appalachian thing:)

    Re: Tiny Moore Tuesday

I'm sorry I misunderstood your comment, thinking it was not made with the highest admiration of Hayes efforts. Print can sometimes transmit so little information.

    Re: Tiny Moore Tuesday

And you're upset some free learning material isn't published? You can always buy a lesson on his site that fits your schedule.
  4. Re: Would anyone be interested in a Blue Chip pick shootout?

That's a fairly small sample of picks you listed. I have about 30 different ones in front of me and many more in my pick jar. The traveling pick samplers have over 100 different picks.

    I'm sure...

Re: Help me narrow down my search

You could certainly find a used Ellis, Kimble, Collings or maybe a Duff at the 5k point in an A. If it’s an F, good luck with your search.

Re: more accurate clip on tuner than Snark?

Korg Sledgehammer Pro. Three sensitivity settings, display in simple mode to strobe. Adjustment of A up or down from 440 if that's an issue. You want to check that before you start:)
  9. Re: Is playing TABS detrimental to really learning?

Notation tells you which pitch is to be played, with time value. It does not tell you where the pitch can be found on a fretted instrument. This is often quite a problem for beginners with no prior...

Re: Still cant play a break!

Teach your ear by starting with the classics, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, 3 Blind Mice, Happy Birthday, etc. You’ll realize the almost all BG songs start on either the 1, 3 or 5 of the starting...

    Re: $1000 Budget

Ratliff's are fine instruments, but I'm prejudiced because I have 2, A and F, both Countryboys. All the instruments are made the same, the difference is the bling, including finish options. The one...

Re: To Cafe Members on the US West Coast

The Alameda fire, which started in Ashland, is 'under investigation' as a body was found near the suspected origin.

Authorities did arrest an arson suspect for a second fire that was started in...

Re: To Cafe Members on the US West Coast

Annual warnings about life safety doesn’t seem to much to me. Some people find it hard to determine risk.

    Re: DiMarzio recommendations please?

Yep, move the neck joint to the 12th fret like Tiny's Bigsby, and reposition the pickups slightly forward and I'd be real happy. Drop the f holes to cut the feedback. Four or 5 strings.

Re: Assessing wood grain of standing trees

Not always. On big leaf maple, the trunk and bark on quilted figure trees shows the same ripple pattern as reflected in the grain on the cut lumber.

But typical grain figure is dependent on how...

Re: Ken Cartwright loses home in Oregon fires

That’s awful for Ken, a very nice guy, friend to all musicians. Used to have a store in Stayton Oregon with a terrific CD selection, a big friend of bluegrass.

    Re: DiMarzio recommendations please?

Since you seemed to ask for an idea, how about a Gretsch-style Chet Atkins, single rounded cutaway, full hollow body, no f holes, hum bucking pickup at the 17th fret for a big, fat jazz sound? Maple...

It looks like it was listed for $4900, and then resisted as ‘ no reserve’. Interesting to watch.
