  1. Re: Two new Campanella Mandolins land at The Music Emporium

That’s a sign o’ the times. So many people have lost their means of making money, and so many people have lost their means of spending it (e.g., travel, sporting events, concerts).

Re: To Cafe Members on the US West Coast

In my part of the state, I’d add temperatures usually under 90 and humidity usually under 60, the ocean 30 minutes away and the mountains three hours away, majestic (when not on fire) redwood trees,...

Re: To Cafe Members on the US West Coast

The big game changers here have been the dry lightning, the stronger winds, and the trees that are drier than usual from the many drought years over the past decade. Multiple fires have become major...

    Re: Need mandolin recommendations a-style

    What a GREAT find!

Whenever Stevie Coyle at Mighty Fine Guitars hears someone say that, he always adds, “For now.” 😃 In my case, I told him that I would prove him wrong. Failed miserably. 🙄😃
  5. Re: Seattle and surrounding - looking for jams and musicians

You might stop by Dusty Strings and ask there. Beware of the mandolin and guitar temptations, though. 😃

    Re: Peter Ostroushko's podcast

“The Mando Chronicles” is a tremendous collection! You’ll get a wide variety of musical styles, all played with great spirit.

    Re: Need mandolin recommendations a-style

In your price range, you’re going to do just fine! You might be slightly happier with an Ellis A, but it probably wouldn’t be worth the extra $1-2K unless you can easily part with that.

    That...

Great project! I’d love to hear him play “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields”!
  9. Re: Happy Birthday Dennis Vance, hoping for a transplant

So true, and when you open a business called The Mandolin Store, that comes with the territory. :mandosmiley:

Happy birthday, Dennis, and may your candle-blowing wish quickly come true this year!

Re: Scale length for Octave Mandolin

That is the key question. The richness of that different animal lies in the open strings and the first five frets. However, that’s also where you’ll notice any increase in scale length.

    That...
  11. Re: Breedlove mandolins - no on-line catalog?

I’m sorry to hear that. Back in the day, I upgraded from a Kentucky 250 to a Quartz OF and then to a Quartz FF, which were my absolute favorites in their price range.

This is a really interesting and fun offshoot of Daniel's weekly interview podcasts. His first one was with Don Stiernberg a couple of months ago, going through his new album, Straight Ahead, and he...

    Re: Chop Chords

I often hear chop chords that are percussively muted, but not mute. The notes of the chord come through, but with a strong attack, no sustain, and rapid decay. As David said, chops should be on the...

    Re: 5 course questions

Either way, your instrument will contain an OM. The question is whether you want to expand it into the range of a mandocello —- making it a cittern —- or a mandola. Basically, your 5-course...

If finances or living space are an issue, that’s a great approach. Otherwise, you run the risk of adding to that list of instruments you should have kept.

I don’t know of any OM series, but David Surette and Robin Bullock are great players who often teach at festivals. So, they might also give Skype lessons. Surette’s website is pretty sparse, but it...

Re: What are your go-to crowd pleasers?

Absolutely! Both of those also work great as set openers.

Around the fire, with only one choice, I might also go with John Reischman’s “Little Pine Siskin” or “Daylighting the Creek.”

  24. Re: i am having problems with "clefs" again. Treble or alto
