    Re: Exposed Bushings

Whoa! Having dealt with some cheap and/or poorly-installed tuners, while wondering how expensive and/or well-installed tuners resolve the same issue (on my assumption that the tolerances are much...

    Re: And just like that...

BTW, I wouldn't really call the MicroCube a "grownup" amp... more like an athletic 12-year-old!

    Re: And just like that...

HA! Yeah, got mine on sale 10 or 12 years ago for maybe $90 US, when the going street price was around $125. It'll also run off a wall-wart converter; I just find the six 1.5 volt batteries more...

    Re: And just like that...

That would depend on how much space you need to fill, and how "electric-vs-acoustic" you want to sound. Guessing that the 5-string is a solid-body, therefore going for a more "electric" sound?

    Re: Sight read tab?

I think there's a core difference between notation and tab that some have danced around but nobody (that my quickish scan has noticed) has hit on the head:

    - Notation describes THE MUSIC, period,...

    Re: What's the real difference?

Nobody has specifically mentioned "responsiveness" as a quality of instruments. Difficult to quantify, but you'll know it when you feel it, when you're ready to feel it.

    A higher-quality...

Re: recommend me an acoustic bass

Bass player's not-persuasive-enough commentary to my wife at a jam session 10-12 years ago:
    - "Hey, for bluegrass, all ya gotta learn are 5 notes, at least to get goin'!"
    - "But, uhmm, you DO need...

Re: source for small, mando-sized strap button

I have, in a pinch, used guitar / mandolin straps interchangeably. Never thought of them being different sizes or on different size buttons.
  9. Re: Getting better at Mandolin by Playing other Instruments

Definitely do get that. Early on in my mandolicity (12-15 years ago), I'd translate favorite guitar parts to mandolin. Maybe the first, and that STILL manages to impress folks, is the Eagles'...
  10. Re: Getting better at Mandolin by Playing other Instruments

At this late date, I've finally figured out that seeing music in new ways on any instrument helps you to see music in new ways on all instruments.

One of the more "accidentally beneficial" things...
  11. Re: Ideas for what could be rattling on Mandolin!

Good point, although some bridge / string-gauge combinations can dictate such an odd angle.

Several years ago, I spent a month or two messing with altered tunings; lots of re-tuning along the way....

    Re: new member, old mandolin

Check out Frets.com for info on setting intonation (distance from the neck/frets) and fitting the bridge to an arched top. Don't worry if photos show an arch-top guitar, the logic is the same. ...

    Re: Timing issues

Lest the uninitiated think that this is entirely a bluegrass & country discussion:
    - The G-Dead's "Uncle John's Band" has recurring 2/4 measures in among the 4/4s.
    - Jefferson Airplane's (Marty...

    Re: Yet another...Mystery Mandolin

Interesting that the 3rd-fret marker is offset toward the bass side by a fair amount; none of the links to other listings show that charateristic. If anything, the others show all markers offset...

    Re: Intonation compensated saddle question

No expert here, just a lot of messing around ...

4 or 5 Hz seems like a huge amount. 4 or 5 cents (meaning 1/100th the error) would be not-uncommon for fretted instruments. Is it possible that...

    Re: Repair Estimate too High?

I can only imagine that "refurbishing" is intended to include structural items like re-gluing ribs and/or braces; that would be a not-very-common skill relative to bowlbacks, and worth paying for IF...

Re: Never seen one of these before.

Body looks like my '63 Kay, parlour-size w/ 14-fret neck, painted rosette & purfling. 24" or so scale. Probably a year or three earlier, as it has tailpiece rather than glued & bolted-on bridge.

A "tubby" A-1 from 1917? Went lighter on just the G course and it's now nicely balanced.

Re: Red Valley Mandolin - Out On The Ocean

    Re: Buy without trying

    Glad that someone said it!

In the '90s and '00s, when eBay wasn't quite so dreaded, I had consistent "good luck" by asking questions whether or not I actually had any. If the seller responded...
