Re: Need Help Identifying Strange Mandolin

Not much about this suggests Catanese or Sicilian build. The double dots are a red herring. Though Silvestri at least used them on this mandolin.

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

Does it appear that they have two sets of tuners? (Red Arrows) One midway along the neck and then another further on up?

And frets in between? (Blue arrows)

Amazing. I'm waiting to come across an instrument that David doesn't play.

Re: Mi sobrino, Pablo, on lute

Bro' Eug, I sent il mio nipote Pablo your link on strings thinking he would wonk out on it. Sure enough he sent back a big thanks which I'm passing along.

    Mi sobrino, Pablo, on lute

Here's my nephew, Pablo, here in Austin performing a piece on the lute that was recorded for a seniors' center up Canada way.

Even though this is hosted at a GDrive location, the video doesn't...
  8. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

The French folks have worked hard to keep Californians from calling their sparkling wines "Champagne" (or burgundy or whatever) and from mustard made in Finland being called "Dijon".

  9. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

Didn't this issue of headstock shape come up back in the "lawsuit guitar" era?

I don't have any more than a sketchioso understanding of all that, but iirc Gibson sued a few Japanese companies...

    Re: Goodwill Gibson A

I think the best advice is to never, ever bid on a mandolin or an accordion on Goodwill online.

Just don't do it. Spread the word.

  11. Re: 1963 Pasquale Pecoraro Roman Embergher-Style Bowlback Mandoli

I wonder which one would win a fight: a War of the Worlds headstock ray or a Renaissance dragon?

  12. Re: 1963 Pasquale Pecoraro Roman Embergher-Style Bowlback Mandoli

That's what I appreciate about them, too, amigo.

Perhaps why I prefer the simpler models, without the Orson Welles WOTW headstock for instance. Or the clumsily drawn dragon or trompe l'oeil...
  13. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

Embergher and CF Martin both added reinforcing plates to the underside of the top between the soundhole and the neck block.
This suggests to me that they knew there could be some distortion...
  14. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

This Washburn bowlback is currently in the classifieds.

Price looks reasonable. Seems worth requesting some further photos from the seller.

    Nothing. With a capital N.

My post was only referring to "design aesthetics". I suppose I could have said "front" but that sounded strange when I was typing the message. Probably would have...
  16. Re: 1963 Pasquale Pecoraro Roman Embergher-Style Bowlback Mandoli

This may be heretical or may be an emperor's new clothes meme.....but I find LE's design aesthetics much better at play on the bowl side of the mandolins compared to the top.

    That's not meant to...
  17. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

For posteriority here's the headstock profiles under discussion. Collings on the left.

As Mike says, the one on the far right... the "open book" headstock....was closely associated with Vinaccia...
  18. Re: My wife has stored it for years,no markings I can see

Wow. That would be muy weirdioso if you are right, and my guess is that you are. ;) But the mismatched grain suggests an alternative method.

Super strange and interesting looking mandolin. ...

    Re: Harwood mandolins and guitars

Thanks, Jim. One of these turned up back on post #260 with the attached Jenkins catalog page.

    Hi Charlie,
I've had a go at trying to repair the necks on Italian bowlbacks, and you are right, it is a very tricky proposition due to how they were constructed and the sequence of assembly.

  24. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

Hard to know what to say.....

Buying any instrument is tricky....buy new and they depreciate faster than an auto,...
  25. Re: Please help! Newbie looking for bowlback to learn on!

I agree with David, the string height does look better on this one.

Still looks like a bit of deformation of the top just were the fretboard meets the soundhole.

    Pretty clean instrument...
