    Re: Right hand cure-all exercise

I think it really comes down to how many hours of practice you put in over your lifetime. :mandosmiley:

    Re: Picking faster?

Practice with metronome and try pushing the pace everyday. Try different things with both hands, pressure, technique to find what works for you. Ultimately it will come down to how many hours you sit...

Re: 3 hours of practice a day?

Skill on an instrument is directly related to number of hours you put in. When I played classical guitar I practiced 2-3 hours per day, but that was when I was in college. Now I try to get 1 hours...

    Re: Practice Regiment Questions

I recommend the book, Pentatonic Mandolin by Niles H. You'll be improvising in jam breaks in no time.:mandosmiley:

    Re: Carters and Gruhns...visit yesterday

I did the exact same thing a few years ago. I was not in the market for a mandolin but played every mandolin in Nashville - I ended up buying a Kimble F5 from Cotton Music a few months later!

    Re: what would you do

Do you think your mandolin is junk? I have several junk instruments - an acoustic guitar and electric base, both of which I'd be fine with using them as firewood. I'd go back to the store if they...

Re: Should I upgrade to a better instrument

Agree with 1ChordTrick, I recommend saving up for an American made A style mando, Weber, Gibson A9, or Collings MT. If it were me, i'd save up for the MT. Have fun :mandosmiley:

Re: Score for "I Never Will Marry"

I could figure it out by ear if I had a mandolin in my lap quicker than it's taking me to write this response :mandosmiley: Have you tried to learn it by ear? It's a good skill to develop if you have...
  9. Re: Trouble following this Whiskey in the Jar rendition

Often times players get confused or forget out to play things when they slow them down. Jess played the wrong rhythm when it slowed it down! Just follow the up to tempo playing and you'll be fine. ~o)

    Re: What is Groove?

When you feel the energy rise during the song. I like playing with people who I can groove with! I get bored with jams that produce no energy.~o):cow::popcorn:
  11. Re: New Mandolin Player... Have a Loar 520, is a Kentucky 800 Bet

Splurge on something a lot nicer! I have never played a Kentucky I liked. Buy a quality American made mandolin. I recommend saving up a little more and finding a Gibson A9 or even more and a Collings...

Just wait until you play mandolins in the $7,000 to $12,000 range, it may have the opposite effect :mandosmiley:

Re: Your Opinions on inspiring a new student?

One of my favorite things to do is attend a festival and meet other pickers and do tons of jamming. The better I get at playing, the more fun I have jamming. Sometimes I lose motivation, but after I...

    Re: Finding the groove

When you practice a song try to get a good grove by emphasizing the first and third beat. I've been working on this lately and I feel it is improving the grove/sound/etc.

  18. Re: So I tried to improvise for the first time, live in a jam ses

  21. Re: Help me choose a F-style mandolin in the $2500 - $3500 Range

I agree with the Collings MF. It will not have the upgraded inlays, but should sound excellent. I've played many Collings guitars and mandolins and have never played a bad one. I cannot say that...

  24. Re: What do you practice when you practice bluegrass?
