    Re: Pick Talk

Yes, I use either a Blue Chip TPR35, or a Blue Chip KS35, both have rounded points all around. When I used to use a tear drop shaped Blue Chip I played with the shoulder end rather than the pointy...

    Re: Modern Oval Holes

Tone wise the Calhoun is a bit of an outlier in the ones you list since it's a flat top vs. the others being carved top instruments. A Collings MTO or MT2O would be another to consider.

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

David makes a great point re: not all instruments are created equal - the finish on the Weber Gallatin that I used to have (it was a custom Gallatin so had a gloss finish rather than matte/satin...
  4. Re: A body, spruce top, mahogany b&s, round sound hole

Not an Eastman or A shape but just an example for the combo of spruce/mahogany: years ago I had a Weber Gallatin F oval mandolin that had a spruce top and mahogany back and sides. It had a lovely...

Re: Mando repair East Bay SF?

What about Lewis Santer? Looks like he's involved in this repair co-op based in Oakland. I've always been happy with the work he's done on my mandolins when I lived in the Bay Area:

Re: String gauge for longer scale length

You do realise that the last reply to this thread was made in June 2007, in other words 15 years ago? I reckon the OP eventually got the information they were looking for between now and then.
  7. Re: Indian rosewood and redwood octave mandolin

Picking me jaw up from the floor, love that figured redwood top - stunning!

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Hmm, perhaps because the instrument met the buyer's criteria for playability and sound?. Why make assumptions about things? You have no way of knowing what someone else's intent is. There's no need...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Why assume that a player bought a relic-ed instrument so that they could "pretend to look like one of the cool kids"? Who are these mythical "cool kids"?
  10. Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

One other thing to keep an eye on re: good tone - make sure you're not lifting your fretting finger too soon, can be quite common to lift the finger fretting the note before the note gets to fully...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

I have a '69 Martin 00-18 that I'm only the second owner of - I got it in 2018. The guitar has a lot of obvious wear on it - finish worn on the neck, finish checking on the body, dings, worn area...

Re: Old New Guy -Any second day tips?

Lots of great advice though I think the left hand is just as important as the right hand. Poor left hand position can result in inability to develop speed and accuracy and worse still could lead to...

    Looks great!
  14. Re: Looking for information on a black f4 Weber

You might want to go directly to the source and contact Bruce and Mary Weber over at Montana Lutherie, I'll bet they'd be able to give you all the specs etc. on it:

    Re: Campanella Mandolin

A friend emailed me and sent the link to the TME listing, asking what I thought of it but with the time difference by the time I woke up and read the email the Girouard was gone - luckily the friend...

Re: Eastman 515 neck too heavy

On a mandolin the point of using a strap is so that your left hand exerts less effort holding the neck up - I play A style mandolins but did have an F for several years and never noticed any extra...
  19. Re: Trouble with my mandolin not agreeing with my straps

Have you also experienced this issue with other brands of mandolin? I don't think it's something that is unique to Eastman mandolins - I just picked up my Girouard Concert A, and with the strap over...

    Re: Weber Bridger mandolin

If I recall correctly the Bridger would've sat higher up the food chain on the Weber Mandolin ladder than the Gallatin and possibly even the Bitteroot as back in the day I coveted one but they were...
  21. Re: Trouble with my mandolin not agreeing with my straps

I found that some straps were too smooth on the side that makes contact with your shoulder and would move around a lot more than other straps. The straps that were the least slippy for me have been:...

Re: compared to a Weber mandolin.

Someone mentioned it in another thread but a second hand Northfield might tick the boxes for the OP since there are wide nut models to be found.

Re: compared to a Weber mandolin.

I'm not aware of Eastmans with wider necks and I agree with mando-bob, I don't think it would be an upward move on the mandolin food chain to go from an Eastman to a Weber - not dissing Eastmans by...
