    Re: Freddie Harris

Sadly, Freddie passed away several years ago. I was trying to find a date for when he passed, but have not found it yet. He was a wonderful musician and since we both played mandolin, we worked for...
  3. Re: The elusive Stelling 2-lump mandolin. Behold the glory!!

That is Dale Reno on mandolin. I had the privilege of playing that mandolin in 1979 when Don and his sons were playing up here in Michigan.
I think it was in or around Jackson, MI but it has been so...

Re: Looking for something darker and throatier

Take a look at Buckeye mandolins. They are pretty deep and throaty. Pete Hart is the builder and one of the nicest guys you will ever talk to. He is obviously in Ohio not far from Parkersburg, WV.

Re: Do You Baby Your Mandolin?

    Yes....

As all of the people that know me will attest to, I am particular about who I even let play mine.

    Re: Bill Emerson RIP

He is my all-time favorite banjo player. He truly understood that songs (with vocals) weren't all about the banjo. He really knew where
to place tasteful licks to make a song better - to fill in the...

    Re: Brought home a Buckeye!

I met Pete Hart back in the '90's at a festival in Clay City, KY. He is by far one of the nicest people I have ever known. I needed some work done on one of my mandolins and he said he would be glad...
  8. Re: Hypothetical high dollar mando purchase question...

I'm of the opinion that you only live once. Do it without any regrets. If your budget allows it, go for it. If you buy right, then when it comes time, you should be able to get your money back out of...

    Re: Banjo Love from Google

If you click on the Google logo, you will see that it is honor of Earl Scruggs. Don't know about the rest of you, but I think this is pretty cool of them to do so.

Re: Christmas presents for mandolin players

Not to sound like a smartie pants, but (and this depends on your skill level and on how you learned to play) what about online lessons to suit your wants and needs? If you learned to play by ear and...

Did anyone from the Cafe' win this package? I couldn't find anything on Eastman's site about the contest, either.

    Re: What is Groove?

It seems that there are several definitions of what the "groove" is so I would like to add mine. Each song has a natural feel to it based on tempo, type of rhythm, and emotion. If you pay attention...
  13. Pete Goble, Bluegrass Songwriting Legend Passes

Not sure how many of you knew about Pete Goble and his amazing ability as a songwriter, but I wanted to let everyone know that he passed away yesterday at the age of 86. Even if you don't know him, I...

    Re: Standing and Strapped Up!

Might want to try adjusting your strap to a different position and see if that would make it more comfortable for you. You want to try and get the mandolin in the same position in relation to the...

Re: Truss rod question on Stiver

Looking at a close up of the picture, it looks like it would take some sort of "star" shaped allen wrench. I am sure there are others here that can give more specifics on that.

That is definitely Don Rigsby. His stance and the way he holds the mandolin are unique to tell it's him.

    Re: 'Danger' of genius?

Could it be that the reason that some people don't like what Tony Rice or Chris Thile or Noam Pikelny are doing and saying "that ain't bluegrass" is because they are jealous that they can't play like...

Did you ever play your mandolin in the bathroom? Oh my! What a sound. Makes just about any mandolin sound good. Just like when you sing in the shower. That reverb is absolutely awesome!

    Re: Learning Opportunities...

Pete Hart, who builds the Buckeye mandolins, is near Athens as well. I recall him
telling me that he learned from someone who lived near him. Great guy and does
    excellent work.
