Re: Long Scale Gibson Banjo question...

Can't help feeling the Gibson long-neck banjo is just the tip of a mighty valuable iceberg! Virtually any Martin guitar or Gibson mandolin pre 1980 is worth more than a Gibson long-neck banjo.

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

I looked at the label - that's not a 1921 label like I ever saw!

One thing I've learned about an F4 - it wants to be an only child. Sounds the best when there are no other nearby mandolins to endlessly compare it against ;)

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

As far as I've seen, a Loar-era F4 (compared to an earlier F4) is just an F4 with a truss rod. Am I wrong?

Re: Long Scale Gibson Banjo question...

Yep, capo it at 3rd then tune normally to an open G chord.

Long-neck banjos are designed to be able capo down as well as up from the 3rd fret starting point.

Re: Interesting F4 - Virzi but no trussrod

I instructed the seller how to find the FON. It's 11068. So 1918?

This one really has some issues:

Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

The danger is the headstock resting on the support there. You really want all contact with the case to stop at fret 2 - no closer to the headstock than that. A sideways knock here could cause that...

Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

Yep, I don't see the fiberglass ones available. But even the Eastman plywood case that came with my MD515 works with the shorter neck. The tuners are clear of the accessory compartment, the neck...

Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

    A cautionary tale.

My F4 came in this case, half way around the world. Not the original case obviously, but seemed good enough for travel:

Took it to see a luthier this weekend, and...

Thanks Mike. I'm in New Zealand, so I'm limited to what turns up locally. It's good to know what to look out for though. Thanks!

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

Thanks, good tips. Definitely not aiming for "as-new". It's period correct for my '21 F4 which is in good player condition. I'd really like it to be a functional sturdy case that looks 100 years old...

    Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

I'm about to start restoring an early 20s F-Case. Among a myriad of things, it's missing a handle.

    Does someone do a replacement?

    Thanks,
    Bazz.

    Re: Blonde F-4

There are 3 F4s at Carters currently.

As well as the blonde, they have a 1935 model, and a beautifully refinished blacktop for $3250 - a great player's price and stunning looking too!

    Re: Loars at Carterís

Pre 1940 5-string banjos are rare. Five string banjo really wasn't a thing in the 20s/30s. The majority (by a long shot) of 5-string banjos from this era were originally 4-strings, with new necks...

    Re: Loars at Carterís

More to the point, there aren't 17 Martin D45s waiting out there to be bought.

There aren't 17 1958-1960 Les Pauls waiting out there to be bought.

    If there's a glut in anything, it's Loar F5s....
